Wembley to host Euro 2028 semi-finals and final, Cardiff given opening game, Glasgow and Dublin both staging quarter-finals

Cardiff’s Principality Stadium will host the Euro 2028 opener, while both the semi-finals and final will be held at Wembley, UEFA has confirmed. Wembley will host the final for the third time, with Germany lifting the trophy in 1996 and Italy beating England on penalties in 2021. Cardiff’s Principality Stadium will host the Euro 2028 opener, while both the semi-finals and final will be held at Wembley, UEFA has confirmed.

England, Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland will host the tournament together, with nine venues across those four countries to be used to stage the 51 matches.

From England, that includes Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Villa Park, Hill Dickinson Stadium, St James’ Park and Etihad Stadium, as well as Wembley.

Meanwhile, Scotland’s Hampden Park and Ireland’s Aviva Stadium join Principality Stadium as the three non-English stadiums involved.

For the first time, all four host nations will have to qualify for the tournament, as UEFA only allows up to two host nations to automatically qualify.

Should England qualify, they will play their opening game in Manchester at the Etihad, before they move to Wembley for the remainder of the tournament.

However, the English national stadium will not host a last-16 match, meaning The Three Lions will not be able to get completely comfortable in the capital.

The national stadiums of Wales, England, Ireland and Scotland will each host a quarter-final, as Wembley did in both the 1996 and 2020 Euros.

Upon Principality Stadium, which hosted the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League final, being announced as the location for the opener, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales Noel Mooney said: "This will be the first time that 'The Red Wall' - our passionate Wales fans - will experience a major international tournament on home soil.

"It's a truly historic occasion that will unite communities, inspire future generations and showcase the very best of Welsh football and culture on the world stage."

The competition will begin on June 9, 2028, with the final coming exactly one month later on July 9, 2028, in what is sure to be a gripping month of international football.

The qualifying draw will take place in Belfast on December 6, 2026, where all four nations will find out their route for qualification.

UEFA have held back two reserve spots in the event that two of the host nations fail to qualify through the regular qualification system.

Hampden Park will host one of the four quarter-finals.

After the stadiums and the outline of the schedule was announced, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said: "The host nations, where the game first took shape, are eager to welcome millions of fans into legendary stadiums, providing the right stage for a festival of emotions."

The two previous occasions Wembley hosted the final, England reached the semi-finals in 1996 and then the final in 2021, so Three Lions fans will be hoping it is a case of third time lucky and that they can go all the way in three years' time.

Despite Northern Ireland not hosting a match at the finals, Belfast being used for the qualifying draw was described as a "proud moment" by Irish FA president Conrad Kirkwood.

He said: "We are incredibly proud that our city will play such an important role in delivering what will be the best-ever Euro - one that celebrates passion, inclusivity and the power of football to bring people together."
