When did Aston Villa last reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League?

Unai Emery's side are competing in Europe's top competition for the first time since the 1982/83 campaign this term.

They won the European Cup during the 1981/82 season, but the following year they were eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 5-2 aggregate defeat against Juventus.

Italian giants Juventus ended up reaching the final in 1983, where they lost 1-0 to Hamburg.

The competition was contested under a different format at the time, meaning Juve were only the third side that Villa had faced on their run to the last eight.

The English side defeated Besiktas in the first round before eliminating Dinamo Bucuresti in the second.

Villa had to face eight teams in the league phase before their meeting with Club Brugge.

Having competed in the Championship as recently as 2019, it will be a remarkable sight to see Emery's side return to the quarter-finals of the Champions League next month.

The first leg against PSG will be at the Parc des Princes on April 9, before the teams meet again at Villa Park.

The winners of that tie will then play Arsenal or Real Madrid in the semi-finals.
