Celtic 1-2 Bayern Munich: Visitors survive late fightback after Michael Olise and Harry Kane strikes

Celtic fought back to halve Bayern Munich’s lead at the midway point of the UEFA Champions League play-off tie, with the German visitors taking a 2-1 lead back to Munich ahead of the second leg.

Brendan Rodgers’ side thought they had opened the scoring inside the first minute as Nicolas Kuhn cut inside and shot from range on his left foot, beating Manuel Neuer to prompt jubilant scenes at Parkhead, only for an offside call against Adam Idah to see the effort ruled out.

But that was as good as it got for Celtic in a one-sided first half as the chances racked up at the other end, with Harry Kane sending the pick of them wide with a close-range header at the far post.

It looked like the home side had survived their first-half test, only for Michael Olise to open the scoring in style seconds before the interval, controlling a raking pass from Dayot Upamecano and cutting into the box before rifling a ferocious shot past Kasper Schmeichel.

And Kane made it 2-0 shortly after the break, volleying home beautifully from a corner after being left unmarked in the box.

Going two down finally sparked Celtic into life and they enjoyed a number of half-chances in the remainder of the game, with Daizen Maeda shooting narrowly wide from the tightest of angles and Arne Engels adjudged not to have been fouled for a penalty after the referee was called to the screens by the VAR officials.

Celtic did eventually get the goal that their efforts deserved, with Maeda finishing from close range from a corner, but the hosts were unable to find another despite late pressure and will need to win away in Munich in next Tuesday’s second leg if they are to pull off a famous Champions League upset.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has spoken to TNT Sports after the game and says that his team’s performance was "okay", adding:

"We knew the atmosphere would give them a bit of momentum to ride in the game. We had to be patient.

A superb finish from Harry Kane means that Bayern have the edge in this tie at its midway point, and TNT Sports pundit Joe Hart says it was a classic piece of Kane magic:

"Harry Kane, he had a couple in the first half, just watched it on to his left foot. A clean strike, you can’t give him opportunities like that.

Celtic’s superb final half hour of this game threatened to turn the first leg on its head, but the final result of this match means that Bayern will travel back to Munich with a 2-1 advantage ahead of the return fixture on their own patch in a week’s time. That is undeniably an excellent result for the Bundesliga side, who have withstood the Parkhead test and will back themselves to have enough to get the job done in Germany.

The final whistle goes and Bayern have held on for a win that gives them the edge in this tie ahead of the return fixture in Munich. Many of the Celtic players fall to the turf after putting so much effort into trying to conjure up an equaliser.

The home side are trying to build up rather than boot it long, which is admirable and probably a good idea, drawing Bayern forward, but it’s not quite working and their time for a late chance is running out.

The crowd are up and Celtic are energised, and so Bayern stroke the ball around in midfield and at the back for an extended period to try and ensure they take a lead back to Munich. They wouldn’t have seen this coming when they were well on top and two goals to the good.

The board goes up to show that there will be seven minutes of stoppage time, giving Celtic yet more hope of equalising on the night.

Celtic cut the ball back to the onrushing Johnston who fires in a powerful shot that Neuer does well to palm over the bar at his near post. It’s Bayern who are hanging on right now.

The game is stopped temporarily while Kane receives treatment. Bayern are doing what they can to disrupt Celtic’s momentum but the green and white shirts pour forward again when the referee restarts the game.

The visitors bring on the experienced Thomas Müller, hoping that the veteran can help take the sting out of this Celtic revival.

Celtic Park erupts as Daizen Maeda nods in from close range after a scramble at a corner. There’s a brief check for offside, and he was from the first touch, but was back in an onside position when the final pass from Yang came and the goal stands. What a moment!

It’s a big moment for Bayern’s Hiroki Ito who comes on for this first appearance for the club. He joined from Stuttgart back in June, but suffered an injury in pre-season that has ruled him out since.

A loose back-pass sells Neuer short and Maeda nicks in to get to the ball first. The keeper does well not to foul him, but Maeda still makes a chance as he goes around the big stopper and looks to shoot from the tightest of angles, only to sends his effort agonisingly across the face of goal. That was such a hard chance to finish, but was so close to the goal that Celtic desperately crave.

A looping cross is taken off the head of Kane by some last-ditch defending, but the loose ball drops to Gnabry who shoots from a tight angle and draws a smart stop out of Schmeichel.

Joe Hart has picked out a dangerous trend in the game, and says that "Harry Kane dropping is not necessarily a good thing for Celtic". While the England striker gets plenty of stick from some quarters for dropping deep for the national team, in this Bayern side it is dangerous when he does so given the amount of pace and talent he has moving into forward areas around him. Hart believes that Kane playing deep, turning and looking for those runners could spell trouble for Celtic as the game opens up in the final 22 minutes.
