Real Madrid 2-1 Atletico Madrid result - UEFA Champions League reaction as Brahim Diaz and Rodrygo give holders lead

Excellent goals from Rodrygo and Brahim Diaz mean Real Madrid hold a 2-1 lead at the halfway stage of their UEFA Champions League last-16 tie with city rivals Atletico Madrid.

Rodrygo latched onto a defence-splitting Federico Valverde pass, skipped past an additional defender and finished with aplomb inside the opening four minutes, but an even better goal from Julian Alvarez got Atleti back on level terms.

Alvarez made something from nothing, curling a shot around Thibaut Courois and in off the post, sending the visitors into the break in the ascendency.

That was also the case after the restart - until Diaz found a pocket of space despite the attention of three defenders via fancy footwork and whipped a shot home, making something spectacular from nothing just like Alvarez before him.

It could have been even better for the holders when Atleti coughed up possession in stoppage time, but Kylian Mbappe crossed behind Vinicus with the goal gaping to give the visitors a reprieve, and leave the tie evenly poised heading into the second leg.

Steve McManaman: "Any advantage you can get, albeit small, the margins are so close between these two sides. It’s a really important goal that Brahim Diaz scored, but it’s incredibly well poised for next week."

It's all over. Advantage Real heading into the second leg, but the tie remains evenly poised.

A game of three wonderful goals, all out of nothing, and it is Brahim's - coming at a time when Atleti were on top - which means the holders are ahead.

Le Normand cedes possesion and Vinicius is running away on the left. Jimenez gets across and deflects the shot behinid when it comes.
