Hansi Flick says Barcelona role will be 'last job in football' before Newcastle UEFA Champions League clash - 'I'm very happy here'

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick told TNT Sports that he is unlikely to take another role in football once he leaves the Catalan club. The 61-year-old, who has also managed Bayern Munich and the German national team, won the domestic treble in his opening campaign with Barcelona last time around. Before Newcastle's visit on Wednesday, the German said he is "really happy" in his current job.

Hansi Flick has said his role as Barcelona head coach will likely be his "last job in football" before the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg against Newcastle United, which will be live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

It comes after the Catalan club’s president, Joan Laporta, said the 61-year-old will sign a contract extension until 2028, with his current deal expiring next year.

Flick joined Barcelona in the summer of 2024 and, despite falling short in Europe, enjoyed a successful first season in Spain, winning the domestic treble.

Before Newcastle's visit on Wednesday, the German said he is "really happy" in Barcelona, revealing he is unlikely to join another club when he eventually departs.

Asked about extending his current deal, Flick told TNT Sports: "We will see. To be honest, the most important [thing] is this season and then we can speak.

"I’m really happy here. I think this will be my last job in football here in Barcelona."

Speaking to Catalan radio station RAC1 on Sunday, Laporta said: "We want to renew Flick's deal until 2028.

"He's in favour of extending as well. We will announce an agreement soon because he's very happy here.

"It would demonstrate stability, that we're winning. I think it's possible that he's at Barca for five more years. He's young, he has a lot of energy and he is happy in the city."

Flick managed Bayern Munich between 2019 and 2021, winning the Champions League in his first season in the dugout, before taking charge of the German national team until 2023.

It was an unsuccessful tenure with Germany, with the team failing to make it out of the group stage at the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

Barcelona’s last 16 tie against Newcastle is nicely poised following a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park last Tuesday.

Harvey Barnes’ 86th-minute strike looked to have won it for The Magpies but they were denied a famous victory as Lamine Yamal converted from the spot with the last kick of the game.

Both teams won over the weekend in their domestic leagues, with Barcelona thumping Sevilla 5-2, while Newcastle claimed a 1-0 win away to Chelsea after delivering another performance that earned the admiration of Flick.

The Barcelona boss said: "Newcastle is a really good team. They defend very well. When you see the Chelsea game, they defend very well in their last third.

"But they are playing the philosophy to go man against man. It’s not easy to overcome them, and we have to do it tomorrow."

The German said Newcastle pose a different threat to La Liga teams, adding: "It’s a very physical team, very aggressive also.

"Man against man is their strength; we have to find solutions, but also we have to find the right space."

Yamal tucked home his penalty in the 96th minute last week after Malick Thiaw tripped Dani Olmo in the area, and Flick believes that late strike could prove crucial.

"This was very important," he said. "When Dani came in, he made a really fantastic move. This is his strength, this is his quality - he gave us the chance to come back.

"But at the end, it's only 1-1 and we have to play the match tomorrow and we want to win."
