ATLETICO END BARCA COMEBACK HOPES IN EPIC QUARTER-FINAL
Atletico Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals with a glorious 3-2 aggregate win over 10-man Barcelona in a thrilling quarter-final battle at a bouncing Metropolitano.
Ademola Lookman netted the winner on 31 minutes when he tucked home a superb cross from Marcos Llorente after the home side had saw Lamine Yamal (4') and Ferran Torres (24') level the tie for a slick Barca at 2-2 with clinical finishes.
After holding off some vibrant Barca attacking play in a memorable battle between the La Liga giants, Diego Simeone's side can look forward to contesting their first Champions League semi-final since 2017 against Arsenal or Sporting.
But they also saw a couple of key decisions go for them to edge past the visitors for the third time at this stage in the Champions League.
After Pau Cubarsi was sent off for a last-man tackle in the 2-0 defeat at the Camp Nou a week ago, Barca again ended the match a man down after Eric García saw red on 79 minutes with VAR deeming him guilty of a similar challenge on sub Alexander Sorloth.
That came after Torres, who levelled the tie with a brilliant finish from Dani Olmo's pass, thought he had netted Barca's third on 57 minutes only for VAR to confirm he had crept offside.

Atletico Madrid forward Ademola Lookman, speaking to TNT Sports: "Game of two halves, really. We stuck in and dug in and went through to the semis.
"As the game is going on, you're playing and moments happen in the game. The pause lets you switch back into gear and we were able to create a few chances.
"We got the goal and we were able to continue in that way in the second half."

Barca deserved semi-final spot - Flick

JOE COLE EXPLAINS BARCA DEMISE IN MADRID
Cole told TNT Sports: "The key moment was when Ferran Torres took one in the face. It was a pivotal moment, that break in play.
"The stadium had flattened, everything from a Barcelona perspective was perfect. The senior players - the Kokes and Llorentes - took control of it and allowed Atletico to weather the storm.
"Yamal was blistering in the first 20 minutes. The pin would have completely come out of Atletico had they conceded a third. They'd have been stunned and could have four or five with Barceloan dominating possession.
"If they were a young and inexperienced team, they would have folded. But they're grizzled, they're old and wise. They're horrible to play against. Everything they were tonight helped them beat a young and brilliant Barcelona team.
"They got old manned out of it."
He added: "The goals and the sending offs all come from the high line of Hansi Flick. I know Flick won the Champions League during the Covid season, but I don't think he can do it against quality like we've seen.
"Atletico Madrid are not elite-level quality. The three key moments in this tie - the two red cards and the Lookman goal - were all of Barca's own demise, defending in poor positions. It's the worst place to be on the halfway line when you've lost your marker.
"I don't think Hansi Flick can win another Champions League with that tactic.
"I think next season, he has to change."

SOME REACTION FROM THE TNT SPORTS PUNDITS
Lucy Ward told TNT Sports: "Barcelona gave absolutely everything, but it wasn't enough. The atmosphere at the final whistle was unbelievable. Atletico have been terrific across the two legs."
Joe Cole told TNT Sports: "Llorente and Koke in midfield were incredible. We saw an exercise in how to stay in the game. If Barcelona had made it 3-0, then you don't know what might have happened but Atletico are stoic and they defended well.
"They stuck together, so it was well deserved. The better team over the two legs was Barcelona, but Atletico worked themselves into the ground, to a man."
Joleon Lescott told TNT Sports: "Atletico had to weather the storm, and I thought they deserved it. You have to give them credit for the way they changed the momentum in that second half."

THE RED CARD WILL BE A SOURCE OF DISCOMFORT FOR BARCA
Lucy Ward told TNT Sports: "Was it a denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity? It's Kounde we need to look at, at the top of the screen. It's obviously a foul. I'm not sure about that. Yes, it's a foul but look at Kounde - couldn't he have got in there? The Barcelona bench are absolutely fuming. Atleti are turning the screw now and are attacking the space Barcelona are leaving."
