GUNNERS LATE SHOW DENIES BAYER LEVERKUSEN FIRST-LEG LEAD IN GERMANY
Kai Havertz came back to haunt his former club as the substitute earned Arsenal a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Bayer Leverkusen.
The visitors bossed the first half but only carved out one chance of significance when a flowing move down the right ended with Gabriel Martinelli hitting the crossbar.
Leverkusen had been well-organised and content to counter but stormed out of the traps from the restart and took the lead on 46 minutes when Robert Andrich headed home a right-wing corner.

The Gunners probed for an equaliser and got it on 89 minutes when former Leverkusen forward Havertz coolly converted from the spot after a foul on Noni Madueke.
Next up, Arsenal are at home to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday at 17:30 GMT prior to hosting Leverkusen in the second leg of this tie on Tuesday night. Leverkusen face Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga at the weekend before travelling to London.

TNT SPORTS CO-COMMENTATOR LUCY WARD SUMS UP ARSENAL’S DRAW
"They huffed and puffed at times Arsenal. They couldn’t really get to grips with the game, but the subs made the difference. Madueke was positive right from the start. It was his run that led to the penalty from Havertz.
"Arsenal will be pretty pleased at the end of it having looked at their performance overall."
EX-ARSENAL DEFENDER MARTIN KEOWN BELIEVES UNDER-PAR GUNNERS WILL BE PLEASED
"They were certainly very sloppy at the start of the second half and then Arsenal got punished. So they will look at that thinking decisive management, taking Saka off when he’s not having one of his best nights.
"There were reasons for that that weren’t his fault, the structure on the right-hand side wasn’t quite right. Madueke, that driving run getting the penalty. He was so dynamic when he came on and that transformed Arsenal.
"But yes, there’s an element of luck. You need that if you’re going to be successful in any season. And now, that is not the end of the world, let me tell you. They’ve got the joint-best defensive home record in the Bundesliga and they were so difficult to break down so Arsenal will be delighted to get back into it."

GOAL! - BAYER LEVERKUSEN 1-1 ARSENAL: (HAVERTZ)
The German makes no mistake as he slides a low stop kick beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.
Lucy Ward on TNT Sports comms: "Immense pressure on Havertz there. He had a hop and I had an awful feeling because of him being an ex-player and all that surrounds that, that he may miss. But I tell you what, that’s a good penalty. But he took his time, took a breath, it was hit with enough pace. Key pressure penalty."

THE VAR CHECK IS OVER...
Penalty to Arsenal!
Lucy Ward on the foul that led to the spot-kick award: "I mean as soon as you let him get in the box. Front foot, goes at the defender, soon as he gets himself in front of Tillman, it’s a problem. Did he get anything on the ball? Not sure he got much on Madueke either. Just caught the back of Madueke."

TNT SPORTS CO-COMMENTATOR LUCY WARD ON THAT LEVERKUSEN HALF CHANCE
"That all came from poor decision making and execution at the other end which has been a symptom of what Arsenal have had to offer tonight. Leverkusen almost have a second but couldn’t make the most of it."

Zubimendi unfortunate to concede a free kick - and pick up a caution too!
Lucy Ward on TNT Sports comms: "I’m not sure about that. Zubimendi making the point. Losing the ball there means they’re right on the back foot. He actually kicks Zubimendi, that’s why he’s complaining. That’s not a foul. Didn’t really look a foul in real time either."
