KANE STRIKES TWICE AS BAYERN DEFEAT CHELSEA
Bayern Munich punished Chelsea’s defensive mistakes as they ran out 3-1 winners in their UEFA Champions League Matchday 1 clash at Allianz Arena.
Harry Kane proved the difference-maker with his two goals helping secure the victory as he netted from the spot, then took advantage of a defensive mistake to score again as he notched Bayern’s second and third goals of the night after Trevor Chalobah’s unfortunate own goal gave the Bundesliga giants the lead.
Cole Palmer scored one and had a second disallowed for offside for the Blues, but the Premier League side were left to rue their defensive calamities as they headed home in defeat.
The first goal was unlucky for the Londoners, as Michael Olise’s powerful cross was deflected into his own net by Chalobah, but the other two goals came directly from major defensive errors.
Moises Caicedo’s clumsy challenge on Kane gifted Bayern a penalty, which the England skipper tucked away to double Bayern’s lead. Then, in the second half, Kane latched onto a mistake from Gusto to fire low past Robert Sanchez.
Kane’s brace sandwiched Palmer’s superb effort as he rounded off a lightning-fast counter-attack to reduce the arrears just two minutes after his England teammate’s penalty.
And while Palmer did produce an excellent finish to dink the ball past Manuel Neuer in the second half, his effort was ruled out for offside by VAR.
It meant that Bayern registered a home win to kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign in fine style, while Neuer registered his 100th match victory in the competition.

COLE: CHELSEA SUFFERED 'SELF-INFLICTED WOUNDS' IN BAYERN DEFEAT
TNT Sports pundit Joe Cole bemoaned Chelsea's defensive slip-ups as his old club fell to a 3-1 away defeat at Bayern Munich.
"I thought the lads were positive at times. You know, they never gave up. They scored the second goal with a great finish from Palmer," he said, before turning his attention to the defensive mistakes that cost his old club dear.
"I think Glenn (Hoddle) nailed it (on commentary). I think it was self-inflicted wounds. When you come to this level, this is a great eye-opener of what the Champions League is about for these young lads. In the Conference League last year, they were running through the group.
"You make mistakes at these big giants, and you'll get punished. I don't think Bayern Munich will do anything this year in the Champions League. I wouldn't even consider them the top, top team.
"But Chelsea, you cannot be losing the ball in them key areas against these players. They will punish you."

Chelsea celebrated, but VAR soon put an end to that after reviewing the goal and ruling the Chelsea striker was offside.
