PSG ARE INEVITABLE AS KANE CONSOLATION NOT ENOUGH FOR BAYERN

An early Ousmane Dembele goal proved the difference for Paris Saint-Germain as they emerged victorious from their titanic UEFA Champions League semi-final with Bayern Munich 6-5 on aggregate despite a late Harry Kane strike.

The Parisians will face Arsenal in Budapest in the final thanks to a heroic rearguard action and some magic dust sprinkled by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who Steven Gerrard crowned ”the best winger in the world” after he put the opening goal on a plate for Dembele.

Despite assertions from PSG boss Luis Enrique that his side would ”change nothing” from the first leg, the visitors relied on grit more than star power to survive the second leg in a febrile atmosphere at the Allianz Arena, allowing few chances for the hosts’ deadly attack of Kane, Michael Olise, Luis Diaz and Jamal Musiala.

Kvaratskhelia looked like he might have sparked another goalfest less than three minutes in when he latched onto Fabian Ruiz’s pinpoint pass over the Bayern defence, raced down the wing then pulled the ball back for Dembele who smashed his shot over Manuel Neuer to give PSG a precious two-goal advantage.

But the game instead turned into a war of attrition.

Musiala and Olise were so close to latching onto a Diaz cross soon after but PSG’s heroic defenders just beat them to the ball in what would become a major theme of the evening.

Despite Nuno Mendes picking up an early booking and Warren Zaire-Emery filling in for the injured Achraf Hakimi at right-back, Olise and Diaz failed to provide the same incision as last week. And when they did find space in the box - as they did within four minutes of each other at the mid-point of the first half - their shooting was inaccurate.

Kane was marshalled exceptionally by William Pacho and Marquinhos, barely seeing any of the ball, and PSG remained a threat on the counterattack, although neither Kvaratskhelia nor Desire Doue could make the most of their later opportunities.

Indeed, Bayern’s best potential opportunity came when a PSG clearance cannoned into the outstretched arm of Joao Neves but the referee elected not to give a penalty, contributing to Vincent Kompany bemoaning ”too much went against us” in the officiating across both legs.

Nuno Mendes also escaped a second yellow for handball in the first half but the hosts struggled to retain control of the match as they tired against Luis Enrique’s indefatigable men. Chances dried up as the second half wore on, yet just as all hope seemed lost, Kane finally created space for himself in the 93rd minute, turning and shooting past Matvei Safonov to give his side the slightest chink of light.

It was to be Bayern Munich’s last shot though and PSG celebrated long and hard on the pitch in scenes reminiscent of their 2025 final win over Internazionale at the same ground.

KOMPANY: TOO MANY DECISIONS WENT AGAINST US

The Bayern Munich manager was not happy with the refereeing across both legs, as his side were denied a penalty and red card for handball tonight, and gave away a spot-kick in the first leg.

"We have to look as well at some of the phases that were decided by the officials across the two games, it's never an excuse for everything but it matters," Kompany told TNT Sports.

If you look at both legs, probably too much went against us.

"But the guys gave everything, we tried against a fantastic PSG team.

"I think on the handball situation, I get the rules. So the very first one [in the first leg] it goes first to his body then his hand, it's close range, it hits his body first then it bounces off to his hand. And they said because of the trajectory of the cross, that's why they gave a penalty. And then the second one, the hand is there in the air, it hits it but because it's from his own teammate then it's not a penalty.

"But if you look at both phases a little bit of common sense [is needed] and it's just ridiculous, whatever needs to happen. It doesn't tell the whole game but it's a one-goal game in the end.

The second yellow card today in the first half, I thought he was giving it.

"And I felt he pulled out because he realised he'd already given it a yellow and he didn't want to send him off for that. I've seen it on a few angles, I didn't see Konrad Laimer touch the ball with his hand. They say he did so, I don't know."

So can Arsenal do it? The two semi-final legs show that every single Arsenal player will need to have the game of their lives to lift the UEFA Champions League, but TNT Sports' Owen Hargreaves believes The Gunners can do it:

"Arsenal have a chance, without question, with the defence and goalkeeper that they have. Declan Rice has lately played as a defensive midfielder and he's brilliant in there. Against this PSG team, the question is how much do you attack as they can hit you on the break.

"They've got different ways of playing, but it will be fascinating. I think PSG will be more attacking than they were tonight against Bayern, but this is a different Arsenal now. They believe now, with Saka coming back with some big goals in big moments. They have a chance, and they just have to believe."

Steven Gerrard added:

"I know more than anyone else that an underdog can win this final. I played against that AC Milan side, and it was a mismatch in terms of individually and collectively, they were a much better side. But anything can happen in a final, they're playing against a high quality team, they're coming up against an elite manager. Arsenal will need to be the best version of themselves for the full game.

"Every single player is going to have to turn up but of course they've got a chance. It might suit them being the underdogs, if they can win the Premier League, it would give them immense confidence and belief going into it.

"They have to use their physicality and size. They have to make every set piece count, and they have to take PSG where they don't want to go and make it uncomfortable for them, but they've certainly got a chance."

GERRARD: PSG DESERVED VICTORY

The Liverpool legend knows a thing or two about winning UEFA Champions League semi-finals, and had this to say at full time on TNT Sports:

I think over the two legs, PSG deserve to go through.

"Last week was a shootout where PSG got their noses in front by a goal, which proved big tonight. But the second leg was all about a defensive masterclass. It was an exhibition to a man across the board, the diligence behind the defensive work, they ran hard, they were compact and they put their bodies on the line.

"They've still got the quality going forward as we saw with Dembele getting the goal. Has he got one hand on the Ballon d'Or again? Who knows. I think Bayern and Vincent Kompany's team have played their part over the course of the week, but the best team have gone through."

It looked like this goal wouldn't matter until Kane's late goal - this was actually the winner for PSG.

Dembele is on the scoresheet but Kvaratskhelia created the goal, and TNT Sports' Steven Gerrard heaped praise on the Georgian:

"He's just so powerful, so dangerous, can go both ways. What an assist, he gets own the left and most wingers would be wasteful in that moment but it was a big moment early on in the game, and he put a peach of a cross in for Dembele.

"But it was also the other side of his game. a lot of wingers only want to do the side of the game where they have the ball at his feet, but this guy does the lot. He works, he tackles, he fights, he can assist, he can score. He's the best winger in the world right now."

PSG WILL FACE ARSENAL IN THE 2026 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL

PSG are celebrating this almost as much as they celebrated beating Inter in the final here 11 months ago. They have a record of two wins, two defeats and three draws against Arsenal but will surely be favourites in Budapest after seeing off the team many thought were the best in Europe.

"Paris Saint-Germain win the beautiful semi-final," says TNT Sports' Darren Fletcher. "Two legs that gave us absolutely everything this great game can offer, two teams who showed us how great football can be, two teams that are an absolute credit to the Champions League."
