Marseille 2-1 Newcastle United - UEFA Champions League result as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang nets quickfire double salvo to stun Magpies

Veteran former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rolled back the years to score a stunning brace, sealing a dramatic 2-1 turnaround victory for Marseille over Newcastle.

The lively Stade Velodrome played witness to a terrific, end-to-end UEFA Champions League clash under the lights as Aubameyang’s rapid double after half time turned the tide after Harvey Barnes netted Newcastle’s sixth-minute opener.

Barnes, the Magpies’ man of the moment, poked home clinically to score his fourth goal in three games but Marseille’s response proved too strong as Eddie Howe’s side crumbled after the break.

Aubameyang’s first goal was the best of the night as he fired in from 25 yards, merely 30 seconds after the restart. Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope had a moment to forget as he needlessly rushed out, allowing Aubameyang to round him and shoot from a tight angle.

The quickfire second was an instinctive, classic striker’s finish as Aubameyang made a clever run to the near post and poked home from 17-year-old debutant Darryl Bakola’s low cross.

Although Newcastle dominated much of the rest of the second half that followed, there was no response as Marseille held on for a pivotal three points, soaring into the play-off places in the League Phase.

Newcastle have now lost four of their eight away matches in all competitions this term, drawing three and winning just one. The 4-0 victory away at Union Saint-Gilloise in October feels like a long time ago now.

"The away record's not good enough, you can't hide away from that. There's no disgrace losing by the odd goal here, because you give them a little bit of something, and they'll grab it.

"They give Aubameyang a sniff, a top world-class striker like that, and he's going to punish you.

"It's a difficult place to play. As a group of players, they have to find a way to get a result away from home.  Back to the drawing board for Eddie Howe."

Martin Keown thinks so...

Despite Isak failing to score in any of his opening nine appearances for Liverpool, Keown reckons Newcastle are missing his presence up top.

Keown said on the TNT Sports Champions League Goals Show: "No Isak. I know he's not really doing it for Liverpool but he looks a huge loss for Newcastle.

"Gordon looked sharp in that first half, but you need a specialist centre-forward with pace. It's not quite there. It doesn't fit them with their game type.

"Everything is about pace and counterattacking. Lots of big games for Newcastle [to come]."

The final whistle blows and that's that. Despite a late Newcastle surge, Marseille have done it!

Aubameyang's quickfire double is enough to secure the victory and an important three points for tonight's hosts. Newcastle's miserable away form continues.

Marseille are digging deep to hold on. Newcastle just cannot seem to penetrate the home defence.

Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, four times an England international, is on for the final few moments. Greenwood is off.

Newcastle are piling on the pressure now and Barnes has a go, cutting in from the left and curling wide of the far post.

That simply wasn't good enough from Tonali, squandering a great opportunity for Newcastle to equalise.

Glenn Hoddle on TNT Sports commentary: "That's a dreadful free-kick from there. At this stage of the game as well."

It's yet another booking as Arthur Vermeeren is shown yellow for a foul on the edge of the area.

Tonali tries his luck from 25 yards, just to the left of outside the area, but the shot is skied miles over the crossbar.

Both goals were terrific, instinctive finishes from Aubameyang.

It's hard to believe the former Gabon international is now 36. He's still got it.

...to no avail. Burn instructs his teammates to join him at the far post from a corner but, to his disgust, the delivery doesn't even beat the first man.

Newcastle break and Woltemade does brilliantly to turn and feed Elanga, but the shot is deflected into the near side netting.

Woltemade's first involvement is a skilful turn away from three defenders in the Marseille penalty area... but it comes to nothing.

Time for the big man! Nick Woltemade is stripped and ready for action...

Jacob Ramsey joins Woltemade in being subbed on for the final 20 minutes.

Marseille captain Balerdi rises highest to make the first connection from a corner, but his header at the far post bounces wide.

It's clever work from Barnes as he wins a free-kick and Greenwood is shown the yellow card.
