Arsenal's long wait for a first UEFA Champions League triumph continues after they lost 4-3 to holders Paris Saint-Germain on penalties after a tense battle ended 1-1 after extra time at a sweltering Puskas Arena in Budapest.
Brazilian defender Gabriel had the chance to send the shoot-out to sudden death, but lifted Arsenal's final spot-kick over the bar after Eberechi Eze had missed his side's second effort.
Gunners goalkeeper David Raya had managed to produce a fine diving stop to halt Nuno Mendes' third penalty for PSG, but it ultimately proved immaterial.
Appearing in their first final of European football's biggest club competition since a 10-man Arsenal had lost 2-1 to Barcelona in Paris 20 years ago, the Premier League champions made a dream start when Kai Havertz scored the opener on six minutes.
With the ball breaking kindly to him off team-mate Leandro Trossard, Havertz bounded clear to thump the ball beyond PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov at his near post.
PSG, without ever finding their fluent best, levelled on 65 minutes via Ousmane Dembele's penalty after Cristhian Mosquera was deemed guilty of felling Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who also saw a deflected shot come back off a post on 76 minutes.
The main talking point towards half-time in extra time saw Arsenal denied a potential penalty after Nuno Mendes and Noni Madueke collided going for the loose ball, with manager Mikel Arteta and Declan Rice then booked for protesting.
In the end, Arsenal were agonisingly denied a historic double after winning the Premier League for the first time since 2004.
But it was a night of joyous celebration for PSG, who defeated Internazionale 5-0 in last year's final, as they join Real Madrid as the only sides to win back-to-back Champions League trophies since the tournament was rebranded in 1992.

"It's very tough to accept," said the Arsenal manager on TNT Sports. "You are so consistent in the competition all the way until the final and in the end you lose the trophy on penalty kicks. It is a difficult one."
On Noni Madueke's penalty appeal, he said: "I watched it back and it can easily be a penalty. Basically we see the penalties they have given in the competition this season.
"The referee's made that decision but he made a different one with one with Mosquera. That's an important one."

PSG OWNER PRAISES ENRIQUE FOR ROLE IN HISTORIC TRIUMPH
"Today is an amazing history day," said Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi speaking to TNT Sports.
"Last year, back to back, it's not easy, the Champions League is difficult. So proud of the team, of the coach of the staff, of the fans.
"Everybody doubted us again, but thank god we made it and we believed."
On Enrique, Al-Khelaifi said: "He's very, very special, as a coach, human being, as a person, he is fantastic. He's the best coach in the world. He has done amazing, with the team.
"With a young team, you know the story. I would also like to thank the players of PSG. This is also for them. They all gave to this project."

On recruiting more players, Al-Khelaifi said: "I tell you, I promise you, we are OK. Of course, we will be going to the market."
On Enrique staying at the helm, Al-Khelaifi said: "He's the best coach, I cannot answer the question, but I'm really confident, and it's all about the project. And he is the best one for the project."

"I decided a long time ago to stay calm [in these situations]," he told TNT Sports.

The England midfielder was booked for protesting after Nuno Mendes and Noni Madueke collided in the first half of extra time in the PSG penalty box chasing a loose ball.
"I've not seen it back yet, but at the time on the pitch I thought Noni was ahead of him," said Declan Rice on TNT Sports.
"Looking back at the one we got against Bayer Leverkusen, it was very similar.
"I'm not going get into it now. At the time I was devastated. Against PSG, you have to be mentally on it. I thought as the game went on we grew into it and created a number of chances.
"PSG have lost loads over the years and now they are having their time. I think that's going to keep happening with us. We are having our small losses but we are going to go on and keep pushing."
