Paris Saint-Germain 5-2 Chelsea result - Khvicha Kvaratskhelia hits late double as UEFA Champions League holders stun Blues in last 16 first leg

Paris Saint-Germain took a massive step towards the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals as super sub Khvicha Kvaratskhelia bagged a late double to give the defending European champions a clinical 5-2 win against Chelsea at the Parc des Princes.

With the last-16 first leg finely poised as 2-2 on 74 minutes, Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen was guilty of giving the ball away as Kvaratskhelia set up Vitinha to chip into the gaping net for a 3-2 advantage.

It quickly became 4-2 when Kvaratskhelia, who replaced Desire Doue on 62 minutes, thumped a brilliant finish into the corner of the goal on 86 minutes before the Georgian forward swept home Achraf Hakimi's pass deep in added time with the visitors pushing for a third goal of their own.

In truth, Chelsea will reflect on this defeat as a match of self-inflicted wounds with their passing late on presenting the Ligue 1 leaders with the opportunity to severely dent their ambitions in the club game's premier tournament.

Chelsea, who defeated PSG 3-0 in the Club World Cup final in July, had twice fought back from 1-0 and 2-1 down with Malo Gusto (28') and Enzo Fernández (57') scoring fine goals to cancel out superb finishes from Bradley Barcola (10') and Ousmane Dembele (40').

But the late three-goal burst from PSG sets up Luis Enrique's side, who scored five goals from nine shots on target, for a possible quarter-final with Liverpool or Galatasaray.

It was the first time the London side had lost five in the Champions League since going down 5-1 at Barcelona in 2000, and they will require a huge effort to turn this match around at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

"I'm very happy I can help the team, but I'm more happy that we won against Chelsea because they are a good team.

"I think we showed today we are capable of everything. We just have to continue like this.

"We conceded two goals, and we can see the mistakes we made, but we are happy with a three-goal victory.

"Chelsea scored two goals at our home, so the good thing is we didn't stop, we tried to score more and more goals.

"The good thing is we are continuing in the right way.  We are the same team. We had a difficult time, but we can handle it.

"I think we just have to work hard and just continue like that.

"We know that anything can happen in football, so we have to be ready for the second leg."

"Chelsea looked comfortable at 2-2," he said.

"Even at 3-2 you'd take going back to Stamford Bridge, with a lot from the game.

"The decision to play out, I think there has to be an element of knowing when to do that.

"This is a way of playing, and it’s a methodology, and the idea is we'll get better at it.

"They think the rewards outweigh the risks. But I think there are ways to play. I think the midfield steps up at 70 minutes, and it cost them."

"Wow, how this game has been turned on its head," said the former Chelsea manager on TNT Sports. "Beautiful bit of play here, lovely skill. They're in behind, it's a lovely little position that Kvaratskhelia picks up on the penalty spoke. Hakimi has time to look up, passes it across the box here. He hits the target, he doesn't hit it that well. Jorgensen can't get down quick enough."

Hakimi with the ball across goal in the final minute of three added and sub Kvaratskhelia slides the finish into the net for his second of the night. It ends 5-2 on the night. Wow! What a late collapse for the visitors.

Alejandro Garnacho has replaced Malo Gusto for the visiting side. PSG have the ball in the net, but Nuno Mendes is offside. Meanwhile, Pedro Neto has shoved a ball boy after trying to retrieve the football. Which doesn't please the home fans. But it is all calmed down quickly.

Kvaratskhelia played on when he had been whistled for foul play, and that earns him a booking.

Kvaratskhelia accepts the Pacho pass before cutting inside to drill a swerving shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the box. What a fabulous finish. Suddenly it is 4-2.

Joao Pedro sees his number come up as he is replaced by Liam Delap, who is only on the park a couple of seconds before drilling a shot wide of the target.

Senny Mayulu replaces Bradley Barcola while Lucas Hernández is on for Warren Zaïre-Emery with the home fans a bit more interested in the goings on.

"Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear," he said on TNT Sports. "Jorgensen there makes an absolute error. There's no angle to play that pass, with the left foot as well. He drags it across. It's too risky! I've got to say, Vitinha takes it beautifully. It pops up in the air, you think is he going to smash it? But it's not, it's a lovely little lob. Talk about self-inflicted. Chelsea, they were defending superbly well."

Jorgensen with a dreadful pass. Straight to Barcola, and Kvaratskhelia sets up Vitinha to chip the ball over the goalkeeper and into the net. A 3-2 lead out of nowhere for PSG.

Rosenior is clearly a content visiting coach with the amount of work his side have put in tonight. Chelsea looking pretty comfortable in defence at the moment as we head for the final 15 minutes.

Lee Kang-In replaces Ousmane Dembélé for the final 20 minutes or so. Which is probably not the worst news for the visitor.

Not sure you really want to be sitting in here, inviting pressure in these final 20 minutes or so. "Chelsea have to make sure they are nice and tight," said Glenn Hoddle on TNT Sports. "PSG are leaving so much space if Chelsea can just find the right runner."
