Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Liverpool result - Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue give holders first-leg advantage in UEFA Champions League quarter-final

VVD on the 2-0 defeat: "Tough work, what was expected. I think we defended with a lot of bodies around the box. Unfortunately the first goal is a deflection. Some small moments on the break when we could have done better. Obviously I'm not happy losing whatsoever. The only positive is that we have another game to play next week. But now, obviously, it's a quick turn around and Fulham waiting for us as well."

On the formation: "It's what they do. They obviously move around everywhere. You have to communicate well, you have to follow your man. You have to take risk in that sense as well sometimes and wait for the right moment to win the ball and hopefully do them on the counter. I think we had some opportunities to do that and didn't do it too well. Hopefully we can be much better, especially in possession, at Anfield."

On the penalty decisions that went Liverpool's way: "It's a clear good tackle, so it's not a coincidence that it should be disallowed."

On Mamardashvili saves: "Hopefully [they will be] very crucial. Obviously last year we played a game that we should have lost but we won it; Ali had to play probably his best game of his career, but we couldn't get the job done at Anfield. Now we are 2-0 down and we have to get a special performance next week. We have a very important game before that, so focus on that"

Can Liverpool turn it around? "We shouldn't forget, we played against the European champions of last season. You see the quality they have, you see the games that they have played already this season, even in the league, but also in the Champions League, and how good they can be. It doesn't really matter, away or home. We have to be absolutely spot on with everything we do, and hopefully our fans can play a big part in that as well. I've been through many special evenings at Anfield. I'm very lucky and privileged. Our fans, that's the backbone of the club. Hopefully they can be there for us again."

On Fulham on Saturday and PSG having a rest: "We have to focus on ourselves and that's the only thing I'll do."

Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia were on target as Paris Saint-Germain claimed a 2-0 lead over Liverpool in the first leg of their blockbuster UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie at the Parc des Princes.

The hosts edged a tight first half and took the lead on 11 minutes when Doue’s deflected strike fortuitously looped over Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Liverpool goalkeeper made excellent saves to keep out Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Doue before the holders added a second just past the hour.

It was Kvaratskhelia who got it as he raced on to Joao Neves’ pass, side-stepped the goalkeeper and fired home.

Ousmane Dembele hit the post as PSG threatened to put the tie beyond doubt in the first half but Liverpool clung on.

The visitors saw Alexander Isak make his return from a long-term injury as a substitute but could not muster a shot on target in the whole of the 90 minutes.

Next up, Liverpool host Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday prior to the second leg at home to PSG on Tuesday night.

"It could have been [a lot worse]. I think if PSG were more ruthless, certainly in the second half, they had big chances through Dembele and a couple of other big moments to go and really kill the tie off," said Gerrard for TNT Sports at the Parc des Princes.

"Liverpool getting out of here with a 2-0 is okay. It's not fantastic, obviously, but if any place can create a turn around and make a tie of this next week, it's Anfield.

"I think you'll see a different Liverpool, I think you'll see a different game plan, different tactics, and you'll see a lot more bolder and braver Liverpool next week. So, a lot to do, but I think they'll be relatively okay with getting out of here with a 2-0."

Gerrard added: "It's going to be a real big ask, and the reason I say that is PSG are so good, they've got so many quality players. It was total domination tonight. Liverpool's tactics and gameplan, they worked for large periods and phases of the game, but they didn't have nothing up top. They were quite toothless. They didn't create anything.

"We got down the sides of the box on two, three, four occasions and the quality from the crossing wasn't there. Ekitike had a slight half a chance. That was about it. So over the course of the 90 minutes going forward, Liverpool haven't offered enough. But what they've done is they given themselves a small opportunity at Anfield.

"I believe the game will look totally different. PSG had it all their own way tonight. I think Liverpool have to throw more punches and be more aggressive. There's no way, I don't think, a back five, with those tactics and that formation, goes and gets you three goals at Anfield. I don't think that's the case. You have to be more on the front foot, more positive, more bold in your selection and your formation and your tactics."

TNT Sports' Steve McManaman: "It's an easy game to analyse, isn't it? Weirdly enough, PSG weren't ruthless enough tonight. The chances they missed, Liverpool had Alisson to the rescue last year. If anything, it was PSG not putting Liverpool to the sword today, because they had really big chances, particularly Dembele had a couple in the second half; blazed one over, hit the post, tried to be too cute at the end.

"I thought Liverpool were very lightweight up top. Flicking the ball, not getting hold of possession, not being ruthless enough, not taking shots on. I'm a little bit disappointed with that, but like Steven, as a Liverpool fan, you almost say '2-0, we've seen it happen before.' But it's going to be difficult to turn this around over this team.

"Marquinhos the captain has had the easiest game of the season. He's hardly done anything today. He's cruised through it. It's going to take a huge performance from Liverpool to turn it around."

"I'll be brutally honest and tell you it could have been worse for Liverpool. They are very much still in the tie.

"We wanted them in the tie for the second leg. In many ways, in many periods of the game, I thought they did well. They didn't create an awful lot; that will be a big disappointment - in fact didn't create anything, if we're being brutally honest.

"Are they in the tie for the next leg at Anfield? You better believe they are."

Dembele hammers a shot against the near upright after a lightning PSG counter almost saw the holders punish Frimpong's misjudgement trying to head a high ball.

Are The Reds still in the tie at 2-0?

Most probably, but they need to hang on here.

PSG have looked more than capable of adding more goals...

Hakimi thunders a superb strike towards the bottom corner but Mamardashvili gets down low to his left to keep it out.
