Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Newcastle United - UEFA Champions League result as both sides miss out on top eight despite Willock and Vitinha goals

It was so close yet so far for Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes, falling out of the UEFA Champions League top eight at the final hurdle.

Reigning European champions PSG got off to a flying start as Vitinha scored a beautiful 20-yard curler to make it 1-0, responding well after Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele's penalty was saved heroically by Nick Pope.

It was a controversial spot-kick as Les Parisiens benefited from a bizarre VAR intervention, just as they did infamously in 2023 when they scored late on to deny Newcastle a famous win in Paris two seasons ago.

Referee Slavko Vincic was advised to look at the screen after the ball flicked up onto Lewis Miley's hand, following a driving run from Bradley Barcola into the box. The ball appeared to hit Barcola's arm before it ricocheted onto Miley's hand, but VAR looked beyond that.

Pope's penalty save felt like justice had been served and Newcastle, despite going behind through Vitinha's stunner, looked determined to put things right.

Joe Willock sent Eddie Howe's side on their way to doing just that, levelling the score at 1-1 just before half-time with a close-range header from a Dan Burn flick-on. It was a superb moment for the midfielder as he netted his first Champions League goal.

But the Magpies, despite enjoying plenty of possession in the second period and seeing a second Willock goal ruled out for offside, were unable to find a winner.

Neither were PSG, and with goals flying in to secure victories for other top-eight challengers elsewhere, both sides were left disappointed upon the final whistle at the Parc des Princes.

There are several statistics Newcastle can be very proud of tonight, even amidst the disappointment of missing out on the top eight.

After a tricky night in Paris, Newcastle's attention shifts back to the Premier League this weekend for a tough trip to Liverpool.

Eddie Howe's side take on the reigning champions for a second time in the space of four days as they head to Anfield for what should be a cracker under the lights.

Safonov has been questionable at times tonight but he's just made a huge save to deny Barnes.

Newcastle's no.11 got plenty of power behind his shot after being teed up by a clever Gordon flick, but Safonov does well to parry the ball away.

In a cracker at Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, Chelsea have come from behind to take a 3-2 lead against Napoli.

Crucially, that shifts Liam Rosenior's side into the top eight, and knocks PSG and Newcastle down further places.

That solidifies the fact that both sides need a goal if they are to finish in that top eight.

Both sides must find a winner if they are to progress directly to the knockout stage, as Inter Milan have taken the lead away at Borussia Dortmund.

With PSG 9th and Newcastle 10th, it looks like they'll both be heading for the play-offs rather than the knockout stage. Unless there's another goal here at the Parc des Princes.
