Paris Saint-Germain 5-3 Tottenham Hotspur result: Vitinha sparks PSG comeback win against Thomas Frank’s Spurs in UEFA Champions League

Vitinha scored a hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain showed their attacking best to come from behind and beat Tottenham Hotspur in a 5-3 thriller at the Parc des Princes.

In a wild contest, Randal Kolo Muani scored twice against his parent club and a late red card for Lucas Hernandez only adding to the drama.

The visitors made five changes from the team that lost the North London derby, setting up with a midfield diamond and two up top in a shape designed to hassle the reigning champions.

And it was Spurs who took the lead when excellent work down the left between Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray saw the latter chip in a cross to the back post, where Kolo Muani headed it back across goal for Richarlison to finish.

But PSG equalised just before the break when Vitinha, given too much space outside the box from a corner, picked out the top corner with a thunderous strike.

An end-to-end encounter went up through further gears after the break, with Kolo Muani opening his Spurs account against his parent club, firing home after Gray’s flick was cleared off the line.

But PSG hit back again through another lovely goal from the edge of the box from Vitinha, and PSG took the lead for the first time when Tottenham gave the ball away at the back and Fabian Ruiz punished them with a clinical finish.

Spurs continued to commit bodies forward, but gave away a sloppy corner and failed to clear on 65 minutes, allowing Willian Pacho to toe-poke in the fourth.

Kolo Muani bagged his second of the night with a terrific finish on 72 minutes as the goals kept on flowing, but the momentum swung back in PSG’s favour when Vitinha’s shot hit the arm of the onrushing Cristian Romero, allowing the midfielder to bag his hat-trick from the spot.

At 5-3 the game was effectively done as a contest, but there was still time for late drama, with Hernandez catching substitute Xavi Simons in the face with a flailing elbow to earn himself a straight red in stoppage time.

The result leaves PSG second in the table on 12 points, with Spurs slipping down to 16th, in the play-off spots but with work still to do.

Tottenham were stung by a Vitinha hat-trick tonight and contributed to their own downfall a little with some errors in the second half, but it was a performance that showed character and attacking intent – in stark contrast to the approach we’ve seen from Thomas Frank’s side against other top-tier opponents of late. Frank mixed things up with his selection, playing a 4-4-2 for the first time this season and utilizing Sarr and Bergvall as tucked in wide midfielders, and it sort of worked. There were signs of quality for sure, not least from the tidy Archie Gray in central midfield, who played a big part in the opening goal. And Spurs will also be encouraged by the display of Randal Kolo Muani, who excelled against his parent club, scoring his first two Spurs goals and assisting another in a performance that showed real flashes of quality up top. It’s probably not the tactical formula that will see Spurs turn things around under Frank, but there were promising signs from an approach clearly designed for PSG, and there are things for Spurs to build on… starting against Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

The final whistle goes to end a breathless encounter in the French capital. Spurs were much-improved, but PSG are deserved winners and it finishes 5-3.

There is no foul by Romero, but VAR is concerned about the elbow from Lucas Hernandez into the face of Xavi Simons. The referee is called to the screen and it doesn’t take him long to make a decision. That’s a clear sending off.

PSG appeal for a penalty at one end, but Spurs break and it’s worked through towards the run of Xavi Simons. Hernandez comes across and beats him to the ball, but looks to follow through with an elbow. This could be a red… or maybe even it’s a penalty for the earlier incident. Late drama.

Dembele runs off the back of Bentancur and is picked up by a lovely pass around the corner. He should be in on goal, against most teams he would be, but Van de Ven gets back and cuts out his pass across the box.

The Tottenham players look a little annoyed at how this game has run away from them. They’ve played pretty well with a bespoke tactical plan, but some frustrating errors have undone their good work (combined with the ruthlessness of PSG of course).

Spurs work the ball to Odobert on the left, who bursts forward and shoots, but it’s into the side-netting at the near post. He had numbers forward in support there – credit to Spurs, they’ve kept on throwing bodies up in attack all game, which you’d hope the supporters would appreciate.

Thomas Frank rings the changes, and it’s the two-goal man Kolo Muani who makes way against his parent club, as does Sarr and Spence, both of whom have worked very hard tonight. Udogie, Odobert and Xavi Simons come on. The latter two both enjoyed spells at PSG during their development.

Spurs are still committing numbers forward and a deflected Porro shot has Chevalier scrambling. He tips the ball behind for a corner, but it leads to little.

When you’ve conceded five goals the last thing you want to see is the holder of the Ballon d’Or, Ousmane Dembele, coming off the bench.

Spurs make a couple of changes, with Palhinha and Kudus replacing Gray and Bergvall, both of whom played well but have tired in recent minutes.

It’s a hat-trick for Vitinha, who sends Vicario the wrong way and slots home from the spot. That’s the eighth goal of an extraordinary game in Paris.

PSG look to hit back straight away and the ball breaks to Vitinha on the edge of the box. Romero steams out to make a block, but the shot strikes his arm, which is away from his body, and the referee immediately points to the spot. The Spurs captain will argue how else is he supposed to move when trying to block a shot, but it’s not going to be overturned.

Spurs nab one back and this game continues to swing back and forth. It’s Vitinha, who has been so good tonight, who gives possession away, with Bentancur nipping in with the interception and feeding Randal Kolo Muani. The on-loan PSG man bursts past the two covering defenders and lashes home a terrific finish. 4-3.
