Real Madrid 1-2 Bayern Munich result: Luis Diaz and Harry Kane give Bayern the edge after pulsating UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg

Bayern Munich have the edge in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid after winning the first leg 2-1 at the Bernabeu thanks to goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane.

In an end-to-end encounter in the Spanish capital, it was the visitors who took the lead at the end of a flowing move towards the end of the first half. Serge Gnabry and Harry Kane linked-up well before the former slid a lovely pass through to assist Diaz, who finished well after evading the attention of Trent Alexander-Arnold and benefitting from some slack positioning from Alvaro Carreras to play him onside.

Bayern extended their lead just 20 seconds after the restart through Kane, who produced his first goal from outside the box in the Champions League, picking out the bottom corner in typically clinical fashion from the edge of the D.

But in a game where chances flowed at both ends, Madrid ensured that the tie remains very much alive going into the second leg. It was Kylian Mbappe who pulled the goal back for Los Blancos, finishing from close range after a glorious cross from Alexander-Arnold.

Both Mbappe and Vinicius Junior were denied on numerous occasions by outstanding Bayern stopper Manuel Neuer, while the visitors missed a couple of golden opportunities themselves, leaving both teams slightly frustrated after a first leg that left the quarter-final in the balance.

Looking ahead to the second leg, he added:

”We’re in a good position, but as always, it's a one-goal lead; it can change really quickly, so we have to stay focused. The time will come next week to try and perform like we did today.”

”Harry’s gone away, there was big pressure on him because he always had that label that he hadn't won a trophy. But he's a hero in Germany. Listen, he's so good. A lot of our chances at the World Cup rest on his shoulders.”

So Bayern Munich have the edge in this quarter-final thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Luis Diaz. But some of the opportunities that Vincent Kompany’s side missed will leave them with a sense of frustration despite having won at the Bernabeu. It was Bayern who played the better football, but Real Madrid were threatening throughout, denied on a number of occasions by Manuel Neuer before Kylian Mbappe finally found the breakthrough. On this evidence goals appear guaranteed in the second leg.

The final whistle goes at the Bernabeu, ending a frantic and fantastic match. It is Bayern Munich who will take a lead back to Germany, but they could have put the tie out of sight tonight, and the expression on the faces of the Bayern players shows their frustration.

Olise thinks he’s fouled in the box by Carreras after getting the wrong side of the full-back, but there’s nothing doing from the officials.

Bayern waste another chance to stretch their lead in this tie, breaking on Real Madrid with numbers to spare, only for Diaz to fail to find Olise with the key final pass. Both teams have had chances, but the expected goal stats will no doubt show that it is the visitors who should be further ahead in the tie. They may rue not converting these.

The end-to-end nature of the game continues as Mbappe bursts into the final third and looks to whip the ball around the last man and into the bottom corner. Neuer is left stranded, but there’s not quite enough bend on the shot and it curls the wrong side of the post.

Bayern are electric in the final third and all of their attacking unit are involved in a move that befuddles the Madrid defence. The final touch is lacking though, as Musiala shanks his shot wide.

Kylian Mbappé has 14 goals in the UEFA Champions League this season; only Cristiano Ronaldo (3 times), Robert Lewandowski (15 in 2019-20), and Karim Benzema (15 in 2021-22) have more in a single campaign in the competition.

Real Madrid are electric on transition and they rip Bayern open on the break once more, with Vinicius shooting from a wide angle, with Neuer again making the save. What a fascinating game this is. Bayern are the better overall side, but there is so much attacking threat from both teams.

The home side have their tails up and the crowd are fizzing right now, so Neuer tries to take the sting out of it. He is booked for taking too long over a goal-kick.

Vinicius is flagged for offside, which only increases his frustration after feeling he should have had a penalty moments early (he shouldn’t).

Luis Diaz looks to double up defensively but fouls Vinicius and is booked.

Bayern are so close to restoring their two-goal advantage as a ball drops to him in the box and he turns in the blink of an eye to swing a first-time effort just wide of the far post. That was the sort of shot that came out of nothing to such an extent that there was limited reaction inside the ground, but it was inches away from finding the bottom corner.
