Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has successfully undergone surgery for an anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL) and has insisted he has been reborn.

After sustaining the injury in a shock La Liga defeat to Getafe, the 25-year-old Brazilian is set for a long spell on the sidelines, which will see him miss the remainder of Madrid's campaign as well as the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, he went under the knife on Tuesday and took to social media on Wednesday to confirm the successful procedure.

"Thank God, everything went well in the surgery," Rodrygo said. "Today a new story begins.

"A new Rodrygo is born. I am ready to go through this whole process and experience God's blessings in my life. Very grateful for every kind message."

Rodrygo, who was linked with a number of clubs in the Premier League and across Europe, has three goals and six assists in 27 games so far this season.

With what is understood to be an eight-month absence ahead, Madrid also released a statement on Wednesday, as they look to navigate the foreseeable future without him.

"Our player Rodrygo has successfully undergone surgery for the ruptures of the anterior cruciate ligament and the external meniscus of his right leg," Real Madrid confirmed in a short statement.

"The operation was performed by Dr. Manuel Leyes under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services.

"Rodrygo will begin his rehabilitation work in the coming days."

Kylian Mbappe is expected to be absent with a knee injury, while Jude Bellingham has been missing since February with a hamstring problem.

Both David Alaba and Alvaro Carreras have calf injuries and are not expected to feature on Wednesday, but the latter could be back for the return leg in Manchester.

Dani Cebellos also has a calf injury, which is more serious and he is understood to be sidelined until April, while Eder Militao is a long-term absentee following a hamstring injury.

In a boost for Man City, Erling Haaland trained with Pep Guardiola's squad on Tuesday after missing their Emirates FA Cup clash against Newcastle United.

City and Madrid will meet for the fifth consecutive season, with Los Blancos eliminating the 2023 winners from the competition in each of the last two years.
