Steven Gerrard says Harry Kane can win Ballon d'Or at Bayern Munich but warns it could be 'one of his last years to do it'

Harry Kane is entering a huge stage of his career, as he hunts down the Ballon d'Or. Having scored more than 50 goals for club and country this season, TNT Sports expert Steven Gerrard believes that the current England skipper is in contention to win the individual award, but a lot will depend on what trophies he can win as he enters his "twilight years".

Steven Gerrard believes that this season could be Harry Kane's last chance to get his hands on the Ballon d'Or.

The Bayern Munich forward is enjoying another stellar season in front of goal for the German giants, having scored 48 goals in 40 games across all competitions in Europe.

He has played a big role in helping Bayern reach a UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid, who they will lock horns with in the first leg on Tuesday - live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.

Speaking pitchside at the Bernabeu before the game, TNT Sports expert Gerrard claimed that Kane should "always be in the conversation" for the Ballon d'Or ahead of a significant period for the forward.

"He should always be in the conversation because of the number of goals he scores," Gerrard said. "What I would say is that it’s a massive few months for him.

"If he can progress in the European Cup and go and win it, if he can have a strong tournament with England and be around the highest scorers and England have a successful tournament, then I think you earn the right to be in the conversation for the Ballon D’Or."

However, former England skipper Gerrard warned that time could be running out for the current England captain to win the prestigious individual award.

Kane secured his first career trophy with Bayern when Vincent Kompany's side won the Bundesliga last season, after a 14-year stay at Tottenham Hotspur.

"What I would say is that he’s picked an absolutely fantastic move from Tottenham, with all due respect, to come to a Bayern Munich side who have grown and are evolving and getting better," Gerrard said.

"He’s in a rush for trophies, he’s coming towards those twilight years, he needs to deliver in terms of trophies, but if he's going to get the Ballon d’Or, this could be one of his last years to do it."

Could winning the Champions League with Bayern be key to Kane getting his hands on the award? Gerrard thinks so.

"When you’re talking previously about [Lionel] Messi, [Ousmane] Dembele, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, they’re always in and around the end of competitions, Champions League finals or the end of tournaments internationally," the 2004/05 Champions League winner explained.

"Harry, in the next couple of months, has got to hope that his teams go all the way in the Champions League and that England can go to the latter stages [in the World Cup] as well.

"That gives him a better chance for the individual awards."
