It looked as if the spoils would be shared until Virgil van Dijk got on the end of Dominik Szoboszlai’s corner with a little over two minutes of stoppage time remaining.

The Dutchman placed a phenomenal header into the bottom-right corner of Jan Oblak’s goal, sending the Anfield crowd into a state of ecstasy.

The TNT Sports commentary team were amazed by the dramatic finish to the match.

Simeone loses his cool

Ally McCoist did not miss the opportunity to deliver a light-hearted comment.

"I thought you said he was calm a minute ago!" said McCoist.

Simeone sees red

The Argentine manager was initially pulled away from the crowd by stewards, but he was not done there.

Simeone ended up returning to the melee, gesticulating wildly, while the TNT Sports commentators watched on in amazement.

"He has absolutely lost the plot there, Simeone," said Fletcher.

"I don’t know what has been said to him.

"He continues to rage."

The minute of chaos came to an end with Simeone being shown a red card for his trouble.

However, the restart did not take place immediately as the Atletico boss exchanged words with both the referee and the fourth official in the aftermath.

Liverpool’s next outing in the Champions League will be against Galatasaray on September 30.
