Chelsea beat Esperance 3-0 in Philadelphia to set up last 16 meeting with Benfica
The Blues will take on Portuguese side Benfica in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup after beating Esperance 3-0 in Philadelphia thanks to goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap and Tyrique George.
After a really flat first 45 minutes in Philadelphia, the match burst into life in first half stoppage time. Enzo Maresca’s side struggled to create any moments of real quality in the match. That was until Tosin scored the opener in the third minute of stoppage time, smartly heading home following Enzo Fernández’s free kick.
Just two minutes later, Liam Delap made it 2-0 to the Blues. Fernandez was once again the architect, finding Delap on the left-hand side of the penalty area, who then turned brilliantly away from an Esperance defender before calmly passing his effort into the back of the net for his first goal in a Chelsea shirt.
Esperance showed they could be a threat on the break on multiple occasions in the first period, countering quickly up the pitch but lacked the necessary quality with their final ball to inflict any damage on their opponents.
The Blues played with even greater control in the second half, dominating possession and moving the ball well without having to really get out of second gear.
Chelsea thought they had won a penalty and a chance to put the match to bed 10 minutes from time when Andrey Santos’ effort struck an Esperance hand, but the referee overturned his decision following a VAR review.
It wasn’t a decision which impacted the match however, with Chelsea scoring a third in stoppage time thanks to Tyrique George's effort from distance. Maresca's side finished their FIFA Club World Cup group stage campaign in second place and will face Benfica in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup. Esperance finished their Group D campaign in third place, with three points from three matches.

THE GAP IS GROWING
As the match ticks on and the players tire, the gap in quality between the two sides continues to grow. The Esperance players can't really get on the ball at all. Chelsea aren't really pushing forward with any real intent either, instead happy to move the ball and tire out their opposition further thanks to their two-goal lead.
