Mason Mount reflects on 'special night' after firing Manchester United to Europa League final with first Old Trafford goal

Manchester United are one win away from silverware, as they face Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the Europa League on Wednesday, with the match live on TNT Sports and discovery+. Mason Mount has had a tough time at Old Trafford, but the England international played his part in the club reaching the final with two goals in the semi-final win over Athletic Club.

Mason Mount has spoken of the "amazing" feeling of scoring his first goal at Old Trafford to help fire Manchester United into the final of the UEFA Europa League.

Mount has had an injury-plagued time at United since making the move from Chelsea in 2023.

Regular playing time has proved difficult to come by for the England international, but he has had a relatively clear run since the start of April.

Mount netted in the 4-3 defeat at Brentford on May 4, and four days later he was on target twice as United beat Athletic Club in the semi-finals of the Europa League.

The 7-1 aggregate scoreline suggested a comfortable time for United, but the Spanish side made a strong start to the second leg and there was unease inside Old Trafford when Mikel Jauregizar gave Athletic a first-half lead.

Mount climbed off the bench and was introduced as a substitute shortly past the hour mark. Within 10 minutes, he helped turn the tide in United’s favour with a lovely curling finish.

The goal was celebrated wildly by United fans and players, and Mount was delighted to have played his part in a "special night".

"It was a special, special night," Mount told TNT Sports. "Even when I think back on it now, I was not doing much thinking during the game, it just happened.

"It is hard to get into that feeling, that moment, but it was like a flow state for 30 minutes and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was a special night."

Mount said it was uncomfortable viewing from the substitutes’ bench as Athletic threatened a comeback.

"Watching the game, you could feel the tension in the crowd," Mount said. "They got the goal and made it difficult. It was never going to be an easy game, they came here and played with freedom."

Mount said his aim was to make his mark on the game after being summoned from the bench by coach Ruben Amorim.

"As a sub coming on, you want to have an impact, create chances and getting that first goal settled it down," Mount said.

"I waited a long time to get a goal here, that occasion to score, the crowd reaction and the occasion it was, it was amazing."
