Ruben Amorim under ‘huge pressure’ says Karen Carney, Paul Scholes thinks he needs ‘three or four windows’ at Man Utd

Manchester United face Real Sociedad in their last 16-knockout tie on Thursday evening, live on TNT Sports and discovery+, and with the club sitting in 14th in the league and out of both domestic cup competitions, Karen Carney believes Ruben Amorim is under "huge pressure". Paul Scholes thinks that the scale of the task ahead of him will buy him another 18 months at least.

Paul Scholes and Karen Carney disagreed over the "huge pressure" facing Ruben Amorim, with Scholes saying the manager needs at least three transfer windows.

Manchester United sit in 14th place in the Premier League and over the weekend were knocked out of the FA Cup on penalties by Fulham.

The club face Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League, the last competition where Amorim has a chance of landing a trophy in his first season at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese inherited a squad from Erik ten Hag, and Scholes thinks that the scale of the job to turn the club around will give him the chance to build his own playing staff.

"I don’t think there’s much pressure on him now," Scholes said on TNT Sports. "I think he’s alright. He’s going to get plenty of time, he needs to change this club around. He’s not signed a player other than [Patrick] Dorgu.

"There are a lot of areas for the team to improve. Giving him three or four windows is what they need to do, and something that’ll take a lot of time to get this club right.

"What else can they do? Where else can they go? He's a really young, bright manager, he speaks well, and did a magnificent job at Sporting. There’s so much going on for him in the background, which can’t be helpful to the team, and must have some kind of effect on them. Give him time, get behind him, and hopefully he can build a team to take us forward."

Former England international Carney thought that Amorim was already feeling the heat, and that he may need to change things up after sticking with his 3-4-3 approach since his arrival last year.

Carney added: "I semi-disagree with Paul there. I think he is under pressure. I think with where they’re going and how they progress, and maybe that stubbornness to keep playing that shape when he doesn’t have the players to do that.

"Maybe other managers would be more adaptable. I understand why he’s not, but he is under huge pressure. He’s Manchester United manager, he’ll know that."
