Aston Villa 2-0 Maccabi Tel Aviv result - Ian Maatsen and Donyell Malen on target as Unai Emery's side return to winning ways in UEFA Europa League

Unai Emery’s side returned to winning ways in the UEFA Europa League, brushing off their MD3 defeat to Go Ahead Eagles by beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-0.

The hosts started slowly at Villa Park, with Maccabi organised in their shape and looking to frustrate, whilst maintaining a threat on the break.

It was the type of match that looked as though it would need a piece of magic to break the deadlock and with 35 minutes on the clock that was almost what Morgan Rogers provided. The Villa attacker wonderfully slalomed past a couple of Maccabi defenders, bursting into the box before bundling an effort at goalkeeper Roei Mashpati who kept it out.

Unai Emery’s side did not have to wait much longer for the breakthrough, though, with Ian Maatsen finding the back of the net from a tight angle after a superb pass from Rogers, right on the stroke of half-time.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, the visitors looked certain to equalise, with the ball cut back across to Dor Peretz just inside the penalty area and with time to shoot but the Maccabi man saw his effort brilliantly saved by Emi Martinez.

It would be a chance that they would live to rue as less than five minutes later, Aston Villa doubled their advantage. Donyell Malen stepped up to confidently fire home a penalty after Ezri Konsa was brought down in the area.

Aston Villa, in total control, then proceeded to manage the game expertly, with Emery able to make five substitutions within the space of 11 minutes with an eye on their match against Bournemouth in the Premier League at the weekend.

That is now three wins from four in the Europa League for Villa, who will be delighted to get back to winning ways in the competition. For Maccabi Tel Aviv, however, they remain winless, losing three of their four matches and drawing the other.

Ian Maatsen spoke to TNT Sports following Aston Villa's 2-0 victory against Maccabi Tel Aviv.

"At home we feel strong, it was a tough game, they are a decent team, they didn't come to sit back, they had a few opportunites to score, but we kept focused, kept a clean sheet," Maatsen said. "it was a hard game.

[On his goal] I was thinking I was offside in the first place! Then in the end, I wasn't thinking and I just put it in. Sometimes you get lucky and it goes in! I'm grateful for my first Europa League goal."

Aston Villa return to winning ways in the UEFA Europa League, with Dutch duo Donyell Malen and Ian Maatsen netting for the hosts.

With the game really petering out now, the referee has indicated there will be a minimum of six minutes added on.

Aston Villa are just keeping the ball now, looking to frustrate the visitors.

Donyell Malen has doubled Aston Villa's advantage from the spot! He struck his effort hard and low into the bottom left-hand corner past the goalkeeper, who despite going the right way, couldn't keep it out.

Aston Villa have been awarded a penalty after Madmon brought down Ezri Konsa in the penalty area.

That looked to be a certain equalizer for Maccabi Tel Aviv! The ball is cut back on the edge of the box for Peretz who fires his effort on goal but Emi Martinez makes a vital save to keep Villa ahead.

Ian Maatsen lets fly from distance, his effort is pushed away by the goalkeeper, Malen pounces on the rebound but he can only fire his effort wide of the target before being cleaned out by the goalkeeper.
