Feyenoord 1-3 Celtic result - Hoops come from behind to claim much-needed Europa League victory and first win in the Netherlands for 24 years

Celtic fought back from a goal down to beat Feyenoord 3-1 in Rotterdam to pick up an important three points in the UEFA Europa League.

Ayase Ueda gave the hosts an early lead after finishing well in the 11th minute, but Martin O’Neill’s side hit back before half-time courtesy of goals from Hyun-Jun Yang and Reo Hatate.

The Hoops began the second-half strongly but momentum soon shifted and O’Neill’s men survived a flurry of Feyenoord chances before substitute Benjamin Nygren fired in a third with less than 10 minutes remaining to give Celtic breathing space.

Luke McCowan had earlier squandered a glorious chance with the score at 0-0 but, in the end, it mattered little as the Scottish champions - who are expected to announce Columbus Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy as their new manager - move on to seven points after five games with a first win in the Netherlands for 24 years.

For Feyenoord and boss Robin van Perise, who brought on his 19-year-old son Shaqueel for his competitive debut, it was another frustrating evening.

The Dutch side have now lost four of their five outings in Europe this season.

Following Celtic's victory, Joe Hart said: "Martin O'Neill and Shaun Maloney can be really proud of what they've seen tonight. This feels really special.

"I came into this game not knowing what to expect and not knowing how to feel. There's context to everything, and I'm sure after tomorrow there's plenty of things that need to be discussed, but they can be so proud of themselves tonight. They have stood up for their team when it matters."

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Johan Mjallby gave his thoughts on Celtic's victory.

"It's a really important win," he said. "They showed great character. It's pride, passion, intent and calmness in the perfect mix. The gaffer must love being instrumental again. Celtic, as a team, it's by far the best performance I've seen this season.

"They worked so well together, both going forward and defensively. The distances were perfect together, they were always narrow. Happy days right now, and it's a really important win in order to aim to make the play-offs."

They have ridden their luck at times, but it has been a largely impressive display from the visitors. They are just moments away from a vital victory.

It's been 24 years since Celtic last won in the Netherlands, but that run looks to be coming to an end this evening.

O'Neill's side are just eight minutes away from a vital three points in the Europa League.

Shaqueel van Persie, son of the Feyenoord boss, comes on for his competitive debut, replacing Lotomba.

A big hand from Schmeichel denies a potential chance for Feyenoord. The 39-year-old palms away an effort from Steijn from a tight angle.

Engles gets into a good position inside the Feyenoord area, picked out by Yang, but his effort is blocked by Watanabe.

O'Neill also makes a change, bringing on Nygren for McCowan.

A second change for Feyenoord sees Nieuwkoop introduced for Smal.
