Nottingham Forest 1-0 Porto result: Vitor Periera’s Forest beat 10-man Porto to reach UEFA Europa League semi-finals

Nottingham Forest reached their first European semi-final in 42 years after Morgan Gibbs-White’s goal earned them a 1-0 win over 10-man Porto at the City Ground, sealing a 2-1 aggregate victory in their UEFA Europa League quarter-final.

With the tie poised at 1-1 after the first leg, Porto were reduced to 10 men after just eight minutes of the second leg as a VAR review saw the referee brandish a straight red card for Jan Bednarek after a high challenge on Chris Wood.

Wood was forced off with injury following the tackle but a buoyant Forest took advantage of their numerical superiority almost immediately, with Gibbs-White’s shot from the edge of the box taking a huge deflection to nestle in the back of the net.

The hosts should have put the tie out of sight in a dominant first half, but Porto responded well after making four half-time changes, and set up a nervy conclusion – hitting the bar twice in the second half but not quite able to force extra-time.

Premier League survival will return to the forefront for Forest on Sunday as they face Burnley, with injury concerns over Wood, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Murillo.

Forest will face Villa in the first all-English semi-final in this tournament since 1973, with the first leg at the City Ground on April 30 and the second leg at Villa Park on May 7.

Forest were without their midfield talisman Elliot Anderson this evening, with the England international grieving the passing of his mother. His teammates displayed a tribute following the goal, and gather to do so again after the game.

Nottingham Forest were the better side in this second leg, aided of course by the straight red card inside the first ten minutes that put Porto down to ten men. But they got the job done, and their European journey continues.

The semi-final will be an all-Premier League tie, with Aston Villa having eased past Bologna in their quarter-final. What a mouth-watering prospect, and England are now guaranteed to have at least one representative in a European final this season.

Forest clear their lines from the corner and do the same from a follow-up cross, launching a swift counter. The keeper has managed to get back, but Porto are hugely stretched and Jesus goes agonisingly close to sealing it, with his deflected shot looping over the goalie and hitting the bar.

Kiwior sees a shot deflected behind for a corner and Porto throw bodies forward. The keeper is up too. Is this the moment?!

Gomes is all over Williams in the full-back area, but the Forest man sticks at his task and ends up with a goal-kick – an outcome that is celebrated almost as much as the goal by the home fans. Forest are inching their way towards the semi-finals.

Bakwa is fouled and Forest look to eat up the clock. The game ticks to 90 minutes, and there will be five minutes added on… although it could be a little bit more, with Thiago Silva falling extremely heavily after an aerial collision.

The Forest fans were jubilant in the first half, but the nerves are palpable now, and so is the frustration, as another foul gives Porto the chance to keep the pressure on.

Time is running out for Porto and they are looking increasingly desperate. A needless foul by Bakwa on Kiwior gives the away side a chance to start another attack.

Porto hit the bar for the second time, with Varela fizzing in a delicious long-range effort that dips at the last and cracks back off the woodwork. What a hit that was, and Porto’s players react with frustration. They are pushing really hard for this equaliser.

Porto midfielder Fofana has been a standout performer in this second half, and he twists into space in the box before lashing a shot from a tight angle narrowly off target. He gestures to the away fans, pumping himself up as much as them.

There’s frustration in the stands as a late offside flag halts a Forest attack. It was the right call and the official played it safe to allow the initial move to play out, but it can look out when play is called back so far.

Forest unlock Porto and Jesus looks to shoot across the keeper, only for Costa to stretch out a big hand and make an excellent stop. The loose ball is hooked away and Porto survive.

These distributions for Forest are only adding to Porto’s positivity as they search for a way back into this tie. They’ve played almost the whole game with ten men, but need just a single goal to force extra-time.

After an extended spell with Porto keeping the game alive, Forest are finally able to get the ball out of play, which is great news for Flech on commentary, who was about to explode with frustration. The stoppage allows Pereira to adjust and replace the injured Hudson-Odoi, with Murillo also taken off with his knock.

Pereiera might have to make a couple of changes here. Murillo, who was kept on with that tactical reshuffle, is down on the floor and receiving treatment. And there’s also concern over half-time substitute Hudson-Odoi, who is pointing to his thigh and grimacing.
