Rangers 0-1 KRC Genk result – Hyeon-Gyu Oh scores winner after Jack Butland made penalty save for 10 man Gers

Hyeon-Gyu Oh came back to haunt 10-man Rangers as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Genk in their opening UEFA Europa League match.

The former Celtic striker had a first-half penalty saved and missed a glorious second-half chance before netting a 55th minute winner.

Rangers were desperate to win and ease the pressure on boss Russell Martin and the signs were good when John Souttar saw his header dramatically cleared off the line by Bryan Heynen.

However, the turning point came after 41 minutes when Mohamed Diomande flew into a challenge with his studs up and caught Zakaria El Ouahdi.

Despite Jack Butland saving a penalty before the half-time whistle, Genk opened up their hosts on several occasions in the second half and Oh eventually punished them.

The pressure is mounting on Rangers head coach Martin who faces a trip to Livingstone on Sunday before flying to Sturm Graz in midweek.

Former Rangers star Scott Arfield said that the Scottish side looked "so open" in defence during their Europa League defeat.

He told TNT Sports: "They just looked so open.

"In transition, it looked as though they could have scored a few more goals. It was going to be inevitable that they put one in the back of the net.

"The Mohammed Diomande sending off is a massive turning point in the game.

"It's a crowd that looks fed up, it looks disillusioned, dissatisfied. It’s not in a great place."

TNT Sports pundit Ally McCoist has said that Rangers boss Russell Martin is "miles off" winning the fans over following a 1-0 defeat to Genk.

He said: "When the fans are against you, something dramatic has to give for you to win them back over.

"Sadly, looking at it and listening to it, that looks absolutely miles off, miles off.

"Now, you can have all the backing you like, from owners and directors and board. But if the people that pay their money come into the stadium, all of a sudden don't continue, something has to give.

"Now, I'm desperate for Russell Martin to turn things around and to start getting a few results, but it looks miles off."

It is not the start to the Europa League that Rangers or Russell Martin wanted. The home side were left open at the back and were deservedly beaten after going down to 10 men.

Rangers now have two away games in the competition before hosting Roma.

That is full-time and Rangers have suffered another defeat under Russell Martin. The clouds are getting darker over the new head coach.

Gassama races clear down the Rangers wing before crossing into the box. The ball drops for Barron whose well-hit effort is brilliantly headed over by Smets.

Frustration is continuing to grow at Ibrox as they have struggled to create any great openings in this second half. Rangers look just as likely to concede a second.

A nice piece of Rangers play results in Gassama sending a dangerous ball into the visitors’ area. Defender Smets knows little about it and guides the ball a few inches wide of his own goal.

A through ball finds Hrosovsky who is just an inch off-side. He crosses for Oh Hyeon-Gyu to net but the goal is chalked off amid muted celebrations.

It has been simple route one stuff for Genk tonight. Rangers have been left open too often at the back. Head coach Russell Martin looks furious with his side and the Ibrox crowd are unhappy.

Moments later Gassama cuts in from the wing and sends a purposeful effort across goal and wide.

A Rangers free-kick falls to Chermiti at the back post. He feels that Bangoura handled the ball but VAR and the referee felt otherwise.

Gassama beats the Genk defender to a ball on the edge of the box. Sadick keeps his studs on the floor but clatters into his opponent.

This time former Celtic forward Oh Hyeon-Gyu finds the net.

Once again the through ball from Steuckers on the counter-attack picks out Oh Hyeon-Gyu in space. The marksman takes a touch before firing past Butland. Oh Hyeon-Gyu is booked for taking his shirt off in the celebration.
