England 0-1 Japan result - Kaoru Mitoma gives visitors first win over Three Lions in final Wembley friendly before Thomas Tuchel picks World Cup squad

England slumped to a forgettable 1-0 defeat to Japan in their final Wembley friendly before the World Cup finals this summer.

It was the first time the Three Lions had lost to an Asian side in international football, with Kaoru Mitoma bagging the winner with a lovely finish on 23 minutes from a supreme counter attacking move and Keito Nakamura's excellent assist.

With England captain Harry Kane missing due to injury, England lacked any real momentum in their attacks with a shot from Marcus Rashford saved by the excellent Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki in the second half, and fellow sub Jarrod Bowen knocking wide the closest they came to an equaliser.

Indeed, England, who were jeered by the home fans at full-time, could easily have been two behind before the late introduction of central defenders Harry Maguire and Dan Burn almost rescued a draw via the set-piece route.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel was also left to reflect on a frustrating evening for Cole Palmer and Phil Foden.

The creative duo both toiled to break down an energetic visiting side, who followed up their 1-0 weekend win over Scotland in Glasgow with another assured display in London before 7,000 Japanese fans.

The final deadline for choosing a 26-man squad is May 30 before England face Group L rivals Croatia on June 17, Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27 in the USA.

But Tuchel has plenty to ponder in making his selection call after this defeat and Friday's 1-1 warm-up draw with Uruguay at the national stadium.

"For sure it hurts," said the England manager on ITV.

"It's always painful to lose, and to lose at home hurts a lot.

"We got punished for not a lot, for one counter-attack in the first half.

"We need these matches, we know it is a tough opponent, we had several players not available. A new formation again, we tried a lot of stuff, and we need to learn."

How did he see the Phil Foden experiment as a False 9?

"It was only a false nine on one side, on the other side it was a normal nine," said Tuchel.

"We need to put it into perspective. It is not the end of the world. It is never nice and we don't like it.

"But it's not a question of false nine or normal nine, it is a matter of performing and making a statement, and winning one on ones, and being brave.

"We can do better but it is a well drilled team that we are playing against, a new formation and new players."

It is a 1-0 victory for Japan against England at Wembley. A few home fans respond with jeers. 7,000 Japanese fans celebrate a momentous victory, their country's first against England. Probably deserved on the night.

Well, open play has not brought much for England, but the chaos brought to this match by Burn and Maguire has been worth a few notes surely. Big Jackie Charlton and Ireland at the 1994 World Cup in the USA springs to mind.

Fair enough, friendlies don't mean much, but England don't want to suffer a first defeat to Japan. Which is on the cards now.

Lewis Hall hammers a shot near post on the volley. Saved by Suzuki. Rogers then blasts over after Dan Burn won a header in the box from a corner. Fair to say, Maguire and Burn have made a difference with their ability to win headers.

Such a presence from corner-kicks at both ends of the pitch. This time he nods wide from a Garner corner. Strong stuff from the big central defender.

See less intros these days in a charity match. Not sure what you can learn from so much change in such a short period of time. But England still looking to save face with a draw.

Dan Burn and Harry Maguire are added to the mix by Tuchel. Konzsa and Guehi off. Maguire sees a header cleared off the line by Sugawara. Almost a dream intro.

The Newcastle captain might be deployed as a makeshift striker late on as England look to salvage an equaliser late on. A few changes for Japan. Yuito Suzuki replaces Junya Ito, Yukinari Sugawara takes over from Daichi Kamada and Shuto Machino is on for Keito Nakamura.

Excellent stop by the goalkeeper to keep out the turn and shot by Rashford before Bowen nudges wide seconds later via the loose ball. Japan still on course for a historic victory.

He departs to be replaced by Junnosuke Suzuki. Anderson on the charge for the home side as they win a corner.

The paper planes are being thrown amid England's ongoing struggles to break down this obdurate visiting defence. Width failing to disturb Japan.

Mainoo out and Garner is in for the home side. Rashford replaces Gordon. Can England salvage a draw from a match that has been pretty lamentable from their point of view?

Well, if this was an audition night for blokes like Palmer and Foden, it has not exactly been a five-star performance. Be interesting to see what the England coach makes of it all.

Isn't afraid to come off his line to collect the high ball. Which is quite an achievement in the modern game. This time he is up highest to clasp the Rogers cross.
