England 1-1 Uruguay result - Ben White scores then gives away penalty on eventful Three Lions return

Ben White scored and then gave away the penalty from which Uruguay equalised on an eventful international return, as England drew 1-1 at Wembley.

The Arsenal defender was booed by some of the crowd when he came on for a first international appearance since making himself unavailable for selection while Gareth Southgate was England manager, before scoring a tap-in at a corner.

That looked like being the winner until White caught the boot of Federico Vinas a fraction of a second after the Uruguayan had stabbed over, and a stoppage-time penalty was given via a VAR review.

Federico Valverde powered the penalty past debutant James Trafford, who until then had not faced an on-target shot.

There was controversy after England's goal when the referee appeared to book Manuel Ugarte, who had already been cautioned, for dissent, but no red card followed; the fourth official later told broadcasters that the second yellow had been rescinded.

Thomas Tuchel was also visibly upset with a Ronald Araujo tackle on Phil Foden which he felt should have been a red card. The Barcelona defender caught Foden on the follow through, having won a 50-50 ball, but the officials did not even given a free kick.

An injury to Arsenal's Noni Madueke, withdrawn in the first half following a heavy collision, was another sour note on a frustrating evening for England, who struggled to create chances against stubborn opposition.

As well as Trafford, Everton's James Garner also made his debut from the outset and was one of England's better players, catching the eye with his pressing in particular.

A stop-start game short on chances which then came to life late on, with White at the heart of things. He was booed coming on, scored a tap-in from a corner and then gave away the penalty from which Uruguay equalised.

There was also a red card that wasn't and a great Maguire block late on to save England from defeat. Plenty for Tuchel to ponder, but perhaps not that many players who have forced their way into his World Cup plans.

Maguire throws himself at the feet of Valverde and makes a super block, denying Uruguay's talisman from eight yards out.

England are suddenly on the ropes.

Valverde steps up and fires low, to Trafford's right and past him into the bottom corner.

Uruguay level with their first on-target shot of the game.

The referee take one look and awards a penalty!

White definitely caught Vinas after he got the shot off, and the referee was in no doubt.

Uruguay open added time with a half-chance, as Vinas stabs over from a knock-down.

They want a penalty, believing he was caught by White after getting a toe on the ball, and the referee is heading to the pitchside monitor...

And he gets to a through ball just in time.

Nunez, Sanabria and Rodriguez come on for De Arrascaeta, Ugarte and the lively Canobbio.

Ugarte is off then, just not in the fashion he may have left the field.

The referee appeared to flash a yellow card at Ugarte – who has already been booked – in the aftermath of the goal, but the officials have told the broadcasters that he was not actually booked, hence the lack of a red.

White ends up on the floor and the ball hits Maguire on the arm. Uruguay survive.

England have the breakthrough!

Palmer's flat corner is helped on at the near post, Muslera saves perhaps unintentionally, but can only divert the ball towards White, who stabs in from a yard out.

The Uruguay players are not happy, believing there was a foul in the build-up, but the goal stands.

Perhaps not surprising, given the number of changes England have made, but what rhythm they had appears to have gone and Uruguay are dominating possession for the minute.

Calvert-Lewin ghosts in at the back post and Palmer's free kick picks him out perfectly, but the Leeds man heads wide from six yards. That's a huge miss.

There's a suggestion there could have been a foul committed by England at the free kick – Calvert-Lewin will hope so, given the size of the chance wasted.

Ugarte takes Palmer out with a late tackle by the byline and earns a yellow card for the cynical foul.

Barnes on for Garner, Mainoo on for Rashford, Hall on for Spence and White on for Tomori.
