Portugal 2-1 Chile result - Bruno Fernandes and Goncalo Guedes score after Rafael Leao and Ivan Roman sent off in first half

Rafael Leao was sent off before Bruno Fernandes and Goncalo Guedes scored in Portugal’s 2-1 win against Chile in their penultimate warm-up international friendly.

Head coach Roberto Martinez was left with plenty of questions as it took nearly 60 minutes for his team to break the deadlock.

Chile goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux looked his weight in gold when, within minutes of kick-off, the Swansea City shot stopper denied Ruben Dias a close-range header with a full stretch acrobatic save to keep his side level.

Portugal would continue to pile on the pressure from thereon as Leao was denied by the upright having well and truly beaten Vigouroux in goal in another scare for the visitors.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who will be heading to his sixth World Cup and looking to complete his trophy cabinet, was then denied by the Chile goalkeeper after connecting with Fernandes' cross and firing a low shot towards goal.

Ronaldo thought he had finally opened the scoring before half-time when he ran through on goal only to see the offside flag raised belatedly, having already slotted past Vigouroux.

As half-time neared, frustrations continued to rise with senior players unhappy with the nature of the tackles and it all came to a head when Leao and Joao Cancelo were fouled in quick succession.

A scrap in the aftermath saw Ivan Roman fall to the ground clutching his face, with both the Chile defender and Leao sent off for their part.

Vigouroux’s heroics continued into the second half when he once again came to the rescue to deny Cancelo, whose overhead bicycle kick had to be tipped over.

Portugal’s opener finally came as the result of substitute Guedes, who was played through by Ruben Neves and slotted past Vigouroux.

Nevertheless, Vigouroux was a constant hindrance, this time denying Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot, who found himself in plenty of space only to see his effort thwarted. However, there was no stopping his United team-mate in the 75th minute.

Unleashing his shot from outside the box, Fernandes proved his captain credentials as he curved his effort into the left-hand corner to leave the Chile goalkeeper with no chance.

Chile scored a late consolation goal in the 93rd minute when Lucas Cepeda’s low shot from the edge of the box caught Rui Silva off-guard, finding the bottom corner in stoppage time.

Martinez’s side take on Nigeria in their final warm-up game before the FIFA World Cup 2026, where they take on DR Congo in Group K on Wednesday, June 17, before facing Colombia and Uzbekistan.

Despite a late consolation goal from Chile, Portugal seal an important win ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Not always smooth-sailing and Roberto Martinez will have plenty of things to think about ahead of their final warm-up match against Nigeria and their opening stage game against DR Congo.

It took nearly 60 minutes for Portugal to break Chile's resilience, whilst they were forced to play with 10 men as Rafael Leao was sent off, alongside Ivan Roman before half-time.

But this time Rui Silva is beaten by Lucas Cepeda and Chile has a consolation and a glimmer of hope.

He's looking around on the edge of the box for the pass but decides in the end to go for it himself as she fires a low shot past the Portugal goalkeeper.

Portugal will undoubtedly be desperate to keep a clean sheet and Rui Silva makes the stop from Nils Reichmuth's shot centre of goal.

Ruben Dias sees his evening come to an end and it's been a solid display by the Man City defender, who can be sure of a place in the World Cup starting line-up against DR Congo.

He's replaced by Tomas Araujo.

And it's Nils Reichmuth, who has just come on, who is able to test Rui Silva, who has not had much to do in this second half since coming on at the break.

And some of the home fans think their side have scored a third, but Pedro Neto's shot is wide and rattles the net from the outside.

Joao Felix comes on for Francisco Conceicao, whose last contribution was that lovely lay-off.

It has plenty of power and it curves into the left hand corner of goal, leaving Vigouroux with little chance.

And Chile nearly have their leveller but Ruben Dias is perfectly placed to deny a dangerous cross into the goalmouth to find Tapia, who was in prime position to pounce.

Before the water break, Chile made two changes to their side as they look to level things against Portugal.

Lucas Cepeda and Rodrigo Echeverria come on for Gutierrez and Acre.

Roberto Martinez is dishing out a new gameplan to his team as Portugal look to finish this game off early.

Whilst it doesn't appear there will be any Mexican waves by the crowd this time.

Manchester United's Diogo Dalot finds himself in plenty of space on the right hand side but he becomes another Portuguese player to be thwarted by the Swansea goalkeeper.

They've got their opener and they want more.

Another substitute in Chelsea's Pedro Neto looks dangerous as he darts forward into the box but his opportunity to shoot runs away from him.

The hosts have broken the deadlock!

And it's all thanks to the substitute Goncalo Guedes as Ruben Neves plays a lovely throughball for Guedes to run through on go and slot past Vigouroux.

1-0 to Portugal.

Chile are definitely enjoying a lot more of the ball in this half and are starting to come alive a bit.

Gonzalo Tapia finds himself with the ball, but it's a rushed effort and goes well wide of the target.

That was heading goalwards and what a goal that would have been.

Joao Cancelo does brilliantly to judge the ball and anticipate it, he goes for the overhead bicycle kick and it was going in if not for Lawrence Vigouroux once again coming to the rescue to tip it over.
