Scotland 0-1 Japan result - Junya Ito's late goal seals victory for visitors in World Cup warm-up at Hampden Park

Scotland were beaten in World Cup warm-up action on Saturday, as Japan snatched a late 1-0 victory at Hampden Park.

Substitute Junya Ito climbed off the bench to score the winner six minutes from time, with the in-form Samurai Blue notching their eighth win in 11 matches.

Both sides struck the woodwork during the first half.

Scott McTominay saw an eighth-minute effort pushed onto the post after meeting John McGinn's cross, while Ao Tanaka clipped the top of the crossbar at the other end.

The hosts looked more purposeful after the break. McTominay saw a dipping free-kick tipped over and Andrew Robertson's low drive was pushed away.

Angus Gunn was quickly out of goal to deny Junya Ito at the other end, while George Hirst drilled into the side-netting on 79 minutes.

However, it was Japan who broke the deadlock and, subsequently, snatched victory with six minutes remaining. Kento Shiogai cushioned Junnosuke Suzuki's low cross into the path of Junya Ito, with Gunn unable to keep out the latter's shot.

They are now without a win in each of their last 11 international friendlies on home soil.

The Scots have never scored against Japan, stretching across all four of their meetings. They have not faced a nation more often without finding the net.

The euphoria of November's dramatic victory over Denmark was always going to be difficult to emulate here. Though Scott McTominay saw a shot tipped onto the post early on, Scotland struggled to maintain a decent attacking threat throughout the first half.

They improved after the break with Andrew Robertson testing Zion Suzuki in the Japan goal, while substitute George Hirst struck the side-netting.

Japan had struck the woodwork themselves during the first half through Ao Tanaka, and they always looked the more threatening of the two sides overall.

Junya Ito had already gone close after climbing off the bench, and he proved the matchwinner six minutes from time, extending The Samurai Blues' unbeaten record against Scotland.

Ralston also comes on for the hosts, with Patterson making way.

Hirst neatly peels away from his marker and stays onside to receive the ball just outside the area.

The substitute makes space to shoot, but drills his effort just the wrong side of the near post.

Roan catches McKenna late, and is the first player into the book today.

Hashioka, Kamada and Shiogai are introduced by the visitors, with Seko, Tanaka and Fujita making way.

Not long introduced as a substitute, Junya Ito neatly twists the defender inside out, but Gunn is quickly out to deny him from a tight angle.
