Spain 1-1 Iraq result - Ferran Torres goal cancelled out by Merchas Doski strike

Merchas Doski’s dramatic strike that caught Spain’s Joan Garcia off his line was enough to earn a draw for Iraq.

Ferran Torres opened the scoring but the hosts failed to break down the visitors with the World Cup only days away.

Spain started the more dominant and took an early lead after Torres was allowed to travel with the ball before slotting past the keeper in the 16th minute.

The hosts continued to threaten but the visitors held firm defensively before launching a shock response of their own.

Full-back Doski marauded forward down the left before looking up and spotting Spain goalkeeper Garcia off his line.

From range, the defender fired an effort goalbound which sailed past Garcia in goal to level the game after 27 minutes.

Gonzalo Garcia had the best chance of the second half on the hour mark but he fired his close-range effort over the bar.

Iraq frustrated Spain for large parts of the match with the hosts unable to test substitute goalkeeper Jalal Hassan. 

Spain face Peru on Tuesday in their final World Cup warm-up game while Iraq take on Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Graham Arnold's Iraq side will take a lot of belief and confidence from a famous result against one of the world's greatest footballing nations.

Iraq are set to face Venezuela on Wednesday in their final warm-up game before they start their World Cup campaign against Erling Haaland's Norway.

With France and Senegal also in their group, Iraq will be delighted with the effectiveness of their defending.
