Real Madrid's lead at the top of La Liga is now down to a solitary point after a 1-1 draw with Osasuna, but the post-match analysis has been dominated by talk of Jude Bellingham's sending off. The 21-year-old looked visibly stunned when he was shown a straight red card in the 39th minute. Bellingham hopes that the footage will contradict the report of referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero.

Jude Bellingham hopes video footage will clear up a "miscommunication" which led to the Real Madrid midfielder being sent off in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Osasuna.

Kylian Mbappe's opener was cancelled out by Ante Budimir's penalty in Pamplona, but the main talking point of the match concerned Bellingham's controversial red card.

Referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero issued the England midfielder his marching orders, with - according to Real coach Carlo Ancelotti - the official claiming Bellingham said 'f*** you' – which the 21-year-old denies.

"It's clear that he made a mistake and there was a miscommunication," he told the media. "I remember the incident very well, but I've also seen the video and the video doesn't match the report.

"I don't want to go into too much detail about what was said, but it's an expression like joder [f*** in Spanish] and it's difficult when a referee isn't sure [about what Bellingham said] to determine I've said something that I haven't, and as a result, it hinders the team.

"I only want to make sure that the team know that I wasn’t irresponsible enough in a situation where I intentionally wanted them to be left with 10 [players], but of course being involved means that's the case.

"I hope the footage will be reviewed and seen that it's not the same as the report, and going forward, the federation can keep that in consideration because it is huge evidence.

"Obviously, we can't change the result of this game, but I'd like to think that going forward, there will be a change."

Bellingham’s comments were supported by Real head coach Ancelotti, who was once again left frustrated by the officiating.

"I think the referee did not understand Jude Bellingham's English. He said f*** off, not f*** you… that's way different," he explained.

"I won't talk more about the referee as I want to be on the bench next week.

"In our last three games, things have happened that everybody has seen. But I don't want to say anything more about that, because I want to be sat on the bench for the next match.

"In the last three games, the VAR has looked at things in our penalty area, and not in the other box. There were two or three things he should have looked at, and didn't.

"I think there's a problem. In the last three games something has happened that shouldn't have happened. We have to keep fighting, playing well, and that's what we'll try to do."

Attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League knockout phase play-off second leg against Manchester City at the Bernabeu on Wednesday – live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Bellingham scored a stoppage-time winner in the first leg on Tuesday, as the reigning champions overturned a 2-1 deficit to take a 3-2 victory.
