Barcelona 4-1 Girona result - Robert Lewandowski scores twice as Barca go clear at top of La Liga

A clinical double from Robert Lewandowski set up a comfortable 4-1 victory for Barcelona at home to Girona.

Lewandowski scored twice after Arnaut Danjuma had given Barca a scare with a second-half equaliser.

The home side dominated the game throughout, but had to wait until the 43rd minute to take the lead when Lamine Yamal’s free-kick hit the hand of Girona defender Ladislav Krejci and bounced slowly into the net.

Danjuma equalised eight minutes into the second half, beating Wojciech Szczesny confidently after a fine through ball from Daley Blind. But that only served to increase Barcelona’s intensity and they were back in front seven minutes later when Lewandowski flicked a clever volley past Paulo Gazzaniga.

Lewandowski struck again in the 77th minute, ramming a low shot into the far corner after a fine run from substitute Frenkie de Jong. It was Lewandowski's 25th league goal this season, moving him three ahead of Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Pichichi.

Another Barcelona sub, Ferran Torres, completed the scoring with a crisp left-footed finish.

The result extended Barcelona’s winning run in La Liga to nine games – and restored their three-point lead at the top of the table.

Barcelona move three points clear at the top after an ultimately comfortable win over Girona. They were given a scare when Arnaut Danjuma equalised but Robert Lewandowski sorted things out with two terrific finishes.

Girona have been hammered but their keeper Gazzaniga has played superbly. He makes one last save, pushing Balde's rising shot behind for a corner.

Lamine Yamal almost puts the icing in the cake with a delicious curlign shot that flashes past Gazzaniga before hitting the underside of the bar and the inside of the post.

Pablo Torre comes on for Pedri.

The substitute Ferran Torres gets in on the act, finishing expertly from Martin's low cross. He touched the ball away from Krejci, just inside the area, and drilled it back across Gazzaniga.

This will be Barcelona's ninth consecutive win in La Liga, a fabulous response to a mid-saeson slump in which they lost four in eight.

Robert Lewandowski settles matters with an absolutely ruthless finish. It was made Frenkie de Jong, who rolled Martinez superbly and galloped into space. He reached the edge of the area before playing the ball to his left to find the unmarked Lewandowski. The ball was slightly overhit but Lewandowski retrieved it, cut back inside and rammed a low right-foot shot into the far corner.

Girona's equaliser was a mixed blessing because it sharpened Barcelona's focus and they're playing better now than they were at 1-0.

Lewandowski runs onto a loose ball in the D and whips a curler that is pushed behind by Gazzaniga, diving low to his left. Excellent save.

Portu charges thrillingly down the left, all the way into the area before sliding a low cross towards Danjuma at the far post. Martinez, perfectly positioned, puts it behind for a corner.

The resulting corner is knocked towards goal and saved comfortably by Szczesny.

Robert Lewandowski gets his 24th goal of the La Liga season! Gavi received the ball on the left side of the area and clipped a lofted pass towards Fermin beyond the far post. He headed it back towards Lewandowski, who muscled his way in front of the defender and improvised superbly to flick a volley between the legs of Gazzaniga and into the net.

Barcelona have responded almost angrily to that equaliser. Garcia, 25 yards out, shapes a lovely curling shot that beats the diving Gazzaniga and hits the outside of the post.
