Ibrahima Konate signs for Real Madrid on free transfer from Liverpool as Jose Mourinho continues rebuild

The defender joins Los Blancos on a four-year contract which will run until June 2030.

Konate is Real Madrid's second free transfer from the Premier League already this summer, after Bernardo Silva made the switch to the Spanish capital from Manchester City.

Jose Mourinho will also be working with left-back Marc Cucurella next season, signed for a reported £47.5 million from Chelsea.

Konate's departure from Anfield had been confirmed before the expiry of his contract this summer.

There had reportedly been hopes that the France international could be convinced to sign a new contract with Liverpool before the end of the season, but no deal was agreed.

A Liverpool statement read: "Konate will depart with our gratitude and appreciation for the contribution he made, and everyone at the club wishes him the best for the future."

Konate joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021 and went on to make a total of 183 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals.

The 27-year-old helped the club win the Premier League in 2024/25, and he also leaves with an FA Cup and two League Cup winner's medals.

"I am deeply saddened that I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to all of you at the last game. At that moment, I didn't know it would be my final time wearing this shirt in front of you," Konate wrote on social media after his exit was confirmed.

"Anfield is truly a special place, and playing in front of you was something I never took for granted.

"From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything. I love you all and will carry Liverpool with me wherever I go. This isn't an easy goodbye, but it's time for a new challenge and a new chapter."

Konate is in France's squad for this summer's World Cup, and was an unused substitute in his country's opening game against Senegal, with Didier Deschamps preferring Arsenal centre-back William Saliba and Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano.

Real Madrid have clearly prioritised their defence as an area of improvement after a disappointing 2025/26 season.

As well as the additions of Konate and Cucurella, the Spanish giants have also been linked with a move for Inter full-back Denzel Dumfries.

Centre-back Antonio Rudiger has had his contract extended until 2027, while David Alaba and Dani Carvajal departed after their contracts expired.

Konate will compete for a starting place in Mourinho's team with Rudiger, Dean Huijsen, Raul Asencio and Eder Militao.

An overhaul was expected at Real Madrid this summer after two seasons without a trophy, with president Florentino Perez turning to Mourinho in a bid to bring glory back to the Bernabeu.
