REAL SOCIEDAD STUN LA LIGA LEADERS BARCELONA ENDING THEIR NINE-GAME WINNING STREAK WITH A 2-1 WIN
Mikel Oyarzabal’s first-half strike coupled with Goncalo Guedes’ goal after the break was enough for La Real to secure a famous win against the Catalan giants.
The win lifts Sociedad five points clear of the relegation zone while Barcelona’s lead at the top is cut to just one point.
Carlos Soler headed the ball into the back of the net after 25 seconds but Barca managed to catch him with their offside trap.
Fermin Lopez thought he gave his side the lead after seven minutes but VAR ruled Dani Olmo committed a foul in the build-up.
Lamine Yamal and Frenkie De Jong also saw goals ruled out for offside before Oyarzabal broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute.
Guedes delivered a deep cross to the back post where Oyarzabal volleyed past Joao Garcia at his near post.
Barcelona were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute after Igor Zubeldia hacked down Yamal but the teenager was coming back from an offside position as he received the ball.
Substitute Marcus Rashford powered the Catalan giants level in the 70th minute, heading in from close range of Yamal’s cross.
However, that lead lasted just one minute as Barca failed to clear their lines allowing Guedes to fire home a volley to restore their lead.
Soler was sent-off in the 88th minute after VAR upgraded his yellow card for a bad challenge on Pedri.
Despite the man advantage and nine minutes of added time, Barcelona couldn’t find a response and fell to their first league defeat since October at the Bernabeu.
