Valencia 0-2 Real Madrid result - Kylian Mbappe seals Mestalla victory to maintain pressure on La Liga leaders Barcelona

Real Madrid ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Alvaro Carreras and Kylian Mbappe to move to within a point of La Liga leaders Barcelona and leave Valencia hovering just above the relegation zone.

Both sides looked to get forward from the off, with Valencia focusing much of their attack down the flanks, particularly down the left-hand side through Jose Gaya and Arnaut Danjuma who looked to get forward and put balls into the penalty area.

But Real dominated possession, looking to break down a stubborn Valencia defense, and the visitors had the first real chance of the match when Mbappe unselfishly opted to slip the ball into the debutant David Jimenez instead of shooting, but the 20-year-old could only fire his effort straight at Valencia keeper Stole Dimitrievski.

It was shaping up to be a match of few opportunities and it felt as though either a mistake or a moment of magic was going to be needed to separate the two sides and after 65 minutes it was Carreras who delivered the latter.

The Real Madrid man threw in a few step-overs on the left-hand side, slalomed into the penalty area past a couple of Valencia defenders before firing home into the bottom corner to put his side 1-0 up - a wonderful piece of individual brilliance from the Spaniard.

Valencia responded well to going behind, almost finding an equaliser just five minutes later with what was their best chance of the match at that point. Filip Ugrinic did brilliantly down the right-hand side to rifle in a low cross looking for Fran Beltran, who was able to get his left boot on it and divert it towards goal, but his effort flew narrowly wide of the post.

Valencia continued to push forward searching for an equaliser but their efforts proved fruitless and, in injury time, Alvaro Arbeloa’s side took advantage of Valencia’s high line to double their advantage and make sure of all three points.

A long ball was punted into the path of Brahim Diaz on the left-hand side, who simply fired his pass across the penalty area for Mbappe, who was waiting to finish from close range.

Real Madrid sit in second place on 57 points, just one point behind La Liga leaders Barcelona on 58, after sealing a seventh straight win.

For Valencia, the situation is going from bad to worse. At full-time, they were whistled and jeered off the pitch, with many supporters waving white handkerchiefs. They sit on 22 points in 17th, just one point above Rayo Vallecano.

Valencia have really gone for this now, with several attackers all on the pitch for the final moments of this.

Arnaut Danjuma has the ball on the left-hand side and tries to poke it into a team-mate but sells it short and Madrid come away with the ball. He looks as though he's starting to really tire out there.

Thierry Correia and Guido Rodriguez are on for Pepelu and Unai Nunez.

That is by far Valencia's biggest chance of the match so far and it has went begging. Filip Ugrinic rifles in a cross from the right-hand side and Lucas Beltran sticks out his left boot looking to divert it into the back of the net but it flies agonisingly wide of the post.

Valencia have not looked close to scoring this evening but they are going to have to commit more men forward now if they are going to avoid defeat at the Mestalla.

Valencia were on the attack and in a dangerous position and the referee has blown up because Camavinga was down after being struck by the ball earlier in the move. The Valencia supporters are furious and they've every right to be, it was not a head injury and there was no reason to stop play.

Arnaut Danjuma faces up his defender on the left-hand side before cutting in on his right foot but opts to not shoot and instead tries to find a pass but plays it straight to a blue shirt.
