Ruben Amorim admits 'something has to change' at Manchester United after shock exit in Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsby Town

Manchester United crashed out of the Carabao Cup to Grimsby Town on penalties, drawing 2-2 and subsequently losing 12-11 in the shoot-out against the League Two side at Blundell Park on Wednesday night. It leaves The Red Devils without a win this season across all competitions, as pressure mounts on manager Ruben Amorim to turn results around in the aftermath of another disappointing result.

Grimsby Town stunned Manchester United in the second round of the Carabao Cup, beating the Premier League side on penalties at the end of a 2-2 draw at Blundell Park.

The result will heap more pressure on a United side that are still yet to win a competitive game this season, following in the wake of one draw and a loss in their first two Premier League matches.

The League Two side were encouraged from a very early stage, going two goals up in the first half, courtesy of Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren - the latter’s effort coming from Andre Onana's failure to clear from a set piece.

But United looked to have rescued the result with two second-half goals to level things up, only to fail to press home their advantage in extra time.

The Mariners then held their nerve at the end of a lengthy penalty shoot-out to take a famous win - and left manager Ruben Amorim to face even more pressure after a disappointing start to the season.

"I just want to say I'm really sorry for the fans. The support they gave me, the support that they help the team. I have nothing to say. I'm really sorry," Amorim said to Sky Sports after the match.

"The way we start the game without any intensity, all the ideas of the pressure, we were completely lost and that's why I think [the players] spoke really loud."

Implying that his players spoke through their actions during the game, Amorim was gracious in paying credit to Grimsby, while also noting that United were at "the limit".

"It's the signs the team gave during the game, the beginning of the game. I think the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch," Amorim added.

"I'm the manager. It should be my job to understand what happened. Again, I'm really sorry for our fans. Let's focus on the next game. That is more than a result. That is the biggest problem in the team. I think it was really clear today.

"I would like to say very smart things and very important things. I have nothing to say. Nothing to say. That is the biggest problem also. To see the same mistakes and nothing to say in this moment. I'm really sorry for our fans. It's too much sometimes.

"You cannot change so much. You cannot change everything in one summer. You need to win games. You need to not show this kind of performance. I think this is a little bit the limit.

"I think something has to change. In this moment, we need to focus on the weekend and then we have time to think."

With his selections under scrutiny from some, including the decision to bring Onana back into the fold, the manager was clear that the result does not belong to just one player.

"With all due respect, when you lose to a fourth division team, it's not the goalkeeper. It's everything," said Amorim.

"It's the environment, it's the way we face the competition. We know that we are in the moment [when] people will pay attention to everything.

"It's going to be massive, every detail. We show the performance today, so my players spoke, for me, really loud."

United host Burnley on Saturday, with anything other than a victory likely to lead to even more pressure. But Amorim believes the team’s issues can be fixed.

"We have a game at the weekend, then we have two weeks and we will solve things out," he concluded.
