Everton 2-2 Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte rescue draw for United amid late VAR penalty fury

Everton were denied a late penalty by a contentious VAR call in added time as Manchester United rescued a frantic 2-2 draw in a classic game of two halves at Goodison Park.

Referee Andy Madley pointed to the spot three minutes into five added on when Ashley Young clearly had his shirt pulled in a tangle with Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt, but VAR sent the match official to the monitor, and he ruled it out.

Several replays from different angles suggested it was not a clear and obvious error by the match official, with the theatrical nature of Young going to ground perhaps denying Everton the chance of a last-gasp winner from the spot.

David Moyes' men had looked on course for a fifth win from their past six league matches when they moved two ahead at the break courtesy of a fine volley from Beto on 19 minutes and Abdoulaye Doucoure's close-range header on 33 minutes.

But the visitors roused themselves late on with two thumping finishes from captain Bruno Fernandes' 20-yard free-kick on 72 minutes and Manuel Ugarte's volley on 80 minutes rescuing a draw for Ruben Amorim's side that they just about earned with the home side tiring.

Everton move a point above Tottenham and Crystal Palace into 12th spot with United remaining a point behind in 15th.

"I think it's a soft touch," said the United manager on TNT Sports. "It's not from what I saw, I don't like to talk especially a few minutes after the game is finished, but I think it was a soft penalty, it was clear.

"If you start the game without the first half, losing 2-0, it's a good point. But we need three points, and to play all the game.That is not the worst part.

"The worst part is that we have the free man, we are losing ball without any pressure.

"We are not doing what we are supposed to do. Then it's really hard. We suffered two goals in second balls, that was clear they will create chances by second balls. We were soft.

"In training, we continue to do the same. That's why in the second half we didn't change nothing, we have to do the same thing, but in a good way."

Scoring goals a problem? "Yes, not just scoring goals but also create a lot of chances. We have to improve on that. But last game also we have chances, this game also, we struggle with scoring goals.

Why are things going wrong? "I don't know. If I knew, I would change it.

"We have to continue to think in the next game, everything we do in the week we have to use it in the game. If we do that, we are near to winning games like we did in the second half.In this moment we need to focus on day by day.

"We need to survive this season, and then to think ahead. We have so many problems, and then when we go to the game and let the time pass, it's really hard.

"I don't want to just say the negative part, the second half was so much better in the belief. In the end we were near to winning this game."

"I was fearing the worst when VAR got involved. I was surprised it wasn't given. The contact is there," said the former Manchester United defender on TNT Sports;

"When you put your hands on someone, you give the referee a decision. Goals change games.

"United cannot continue like this, they have got to start games like they mean it.

"The substitutions were big. Alejandro Garnacho changed things, Bruno Fernandes dropping deep, but there's so many things to pick this performance apart.

"They were positive at the end and that's where you've got to look."

It ends 2-2 at Goodison Park. What an incredible match. Everton looked so comfortable, but United produce a rousing comeback late on to salvage a point that never looked on. Fernandes with the corner, but Everton scramble it clear and it ends 2-2. Phew! What a finish.

Maguire on Young. Was it a dive? It isn't going to be given. No penalty to Everton. The game restarts with a drop ball.

"The intensity levels of the team changed once the substitutes happened," he said on TNT Sports. "Garnacho had a huge impact, facing people up and running in behind, Bruno dropping deeper. Totally different United team to the one that were embarrassing in the first half. Fantastic response."

Was late with the challenge on Garnacho seconds before that bullet finish by Ugarte. United fans suddenly expecting victory from what had been a torrid afternoon.

Well, nobody saw this coming as Manuel Ugarte thumps a clearance by Beto high into the net to draw the visitors level at 2-2. Astonishing comeback.

Everton didn't see this coming, and nor did the suffering United fans. Suddenly United have the momentum in this contest as Maguire takes a tumble looking for a penalty. Nothing doing.

"I'm sitting here, and I don't know if I have seen a United team this bad," said Rio on TNT Sports.

"It has been embarrassing in all different facets of the game.

"Yes, we can talk about quality, you talk about talent, but one thing which is unforgivable is a lack of desire.

"There are instances where Man Utd need to look at this Everton team and take examples from it.

"It's embarrassing to sit here and watch it."

United did not have a shot on target in this game until Bruno steps up to whip a retaken free-kick from 20 yards over the wall and into the corner of the net. Pickford left with no chance as ball flew past him low to his left. Brilliant! Game on!

Rasmus Hojlund departs to be replaced by Chido Obi as Lenny Yorro takes over from Noussair Mazraoui.

About 25 yards from goal as Garnacho is taken out late by Doucouré. Everton fans and players unhappy. Meanwhile, United going to make more changes.

A timely stop by the United keeper to move his frame to his left to prevent Abdoulaye Doucoure from scoring his second with a probing volley. United look completely out of ideas.
