Christian Eriksen has admitted Manchester United were "lucky" to avoid relegation following the worst Premier League campaign in the club’s history.

Ruben Amorim’s side finished 15th in the division, three places above the relegation zone and with just 42 points, leading to the United manager describing their season as a "disaster".

The Red Devils did have the opportunity to finish the season with some silverware but were beaten by fellow Premier League strugglers Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday.

Eriksen, who scored United’s second in their 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday in his final game for the club, has admitted his side were fortunate to stay in the Premier League given their performances this season.

Discussing the disappointing campaign, the Denmark international told the PA news agency: "I think unfortunately there’s been a lot of lows this season with the games, and obviously the final was the missing piece. It’s football.

"For me now, I think people are lucky that we are where we are, not relegated with the team with the season we’ve had.

"Next season it has to be better, and I’m sure it will be. I’m looking forward to watching it from the sides."

Amorim, who has won just seven league games from a possible 27 since taking over in November, echoed this message following his side’s win over Villa on the final day of the season.

The Portuguese told the Old Trafford crowd that "the good days are coming", and Eriksen is "confident" things will turn around under the 40-year-old if he is given the necessary time.

The midfielder said: "I think you’ve seen progress – of course, the results haven’t really shown that. 100% the results haven’t shown that.

"I think the football we came from [Erik] ten Hag to this is obviously going to take time to adapt, and obviously it’s been far below the standard of the club and the players here.

"I think the players individually are very, very good players, and they should never be where we are in the table. It’s up to them to turn around, but yeah, I’m confident they’ll be a very different team next season, I’m sure."

'They could have caused chaos' - Eriksen grateful for backing of supporters

Given United’s struggles on the pitch, Eriksen was "surprised" by the degree to which the supporters continued to stick by the players.

The 33-year-old said: "There have been so many games this season where they could have caused a lot of chaos, where we’ve been disappointed with our football.

"But obviously, the fans, I think to our surprise, really have supported us.

"Obviously, at home has been, even in the stadium, there’s been games where it’s not been good enough, but they’ve really been supportive and away especially, they’ve been even more on their toes and even in the worst times.

"The club is happy to have those supporters who really support the players and the club, no matter what."

The Dane’s penalty against Villa on Thursday was his only league goal of the season, but he said he "was happy to see that go in and finish off like I started: with a smile on my face".

Eriksen, who signed for United from Brentford in 2022, said there is "nothing" concrete in place for his future but that he has "options".

Discussing his three years at Old Trafford, he said: "I’ve really enjoyed my time. It’s a club I’ve always looked up to – the club size and everything around it.

"I’ve loved the pressure, loved the style of play with the different managers and the people at the club.

"I mean, they’ve taken really good care of me and my family, so in that sense I’ve had three very, very good years.

"Obviously, it’s been a lot of ups and downs in football, but I think in general I’ve had a special time."
