Casemiro to leave Manchester United in the summer after contract expires - but vows to create 'more memories' before end of season

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro will leave the club this summer when his current contract comes to an end. The Brazilian joined from Real Madrid in 2022, making over 100 appearances to date and winning two trophies. The 33-year-old is focused on ending his time at the club on a high. "We still have a lot to fight for together; my complete focus will remain on giving my everything," he said.

Brazilian midfielder Casemiro will leave Manchester United when his contract expires at the end of the current season.

The 33-year old arrived at Old Trafford in 2022 from Real Madrid and has helped the club to two trophies, the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup 12 months later, when they memorably beat Manchester City at Wembley.

The club confirmed the news on Thursday with a post that read: "Casemiro will depart United at the end of the season, upon the expiry of his contract.

"A serial winner, we thank Case for his contributions in red so far and hope to finish his time at the club on a high together."

United had the option to trigger a 12-month extension at the end of the season - according to Sky Sports - but Casemiro's final home game will be against Nottingham Forest in May.

During the penultimate round of Premier League fixtures, fans will be encouraged to show their appreciation for the departing midfielder.

Casemiro told the club's official website: "I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life.

"From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that I now share with our supporters for this special club.

"It is not time to say goodbye - there are many more memories to create during the next four months.

Casemiro, signed from Real Madrid for £70 million, has played a significant role in what limited success United have enjoyed during his spell at Old Trafford.

He was instrumental in the club's 2023 Carabao Cup triumph, heading home a goal in the 2-0 win over Newcastle United at Wembley, and also started United’s Emirates FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in 2024. Both those successes came under the management of Erik ten Hag.

However, the 2024/25 campaign proved to be more turbulent. New boss Ruben Amorim’s struggles were frequently attributed to his rigid adherence to a 3-4-3 system, one that paired Casemiro with Bruno Fernandes at the heart of midfield and drew criticism as results faltered.

Now well into his thirties, Casemiro became an indirect focal point of scrutiny when new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe remarked during last season that certain players were "not good enough" and "overpaid" - without naming individuals.

The appointment of Michael Carrick as head coach has signalled a shift towards the future, highlighted by Kobbie Mainoo's first Premier League start of the campaign in last Saturday's victory over Manchester City, albeit alongside Casemiro.

In that context, and with Casemiro being among the club's highest earners, he is set to bring his Old Trafford career to a close, with his departure coming ahead of the World Cup in America.

United are determined to overhaul their midfield this summer, and have been linked with moves for Brighton's Carlos Baleba, Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton.
