ARSENAL SLUMP TO SHOCK DEFEAT AS TITLE HOPES SUFFER BLOW

Arsenal's hopes of winning a first Premier League title since 2004 were rocked as Alex Scott netted a deserved second-half winner for an energetic Bournemouth side as they prevailed 2-1 at the Emirates.

Mikel Arteta's men would have gone 12 points clear of Manchester City with three points on Saturday, but remain only nine ahead of Pep Guardiola's side, who have two games in hand, before The Gunners visit City next Sunday in a potentially season-defining showdown.

In truth, they deserved nothing against Andoni Iraola's slick visitors, who moved ahead on 17 minutes when Junior Kroupi nudged home a volley after Adrien Truffert's low cross had deflected into his path via the unfortunate William Saliba.

Arsenal failed to create a meaningful chance in open play with their equaliser coming via a fortuitous penalty award after Viktor Gyokeres converted with captain Ryan Christie penalised by referee Michael Oliver for an unnatural arm position in blocking a Gabriel effort.

Despite a rash of home changes after the interval, it was the visitors who were dominant in securing the win when Scott danced through the middle of the home defence to finish in some style on 74 minutes from the Evanilson lay-off.

Arsenal have now lost three of their past four matches, including 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final to City and 2-1 at Southampton in the FA Cup last eight, and must regroup before they host Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday - live on TNT Sports and HBO Max - holding a 1-0 first-leg advantage.

Indeed, they will hope London rivals Chelsea can do them a favour when they host City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

While Arsenal saw their eight-match unbeaten run in the league ended in fairly dismal fashion, Bournemouth extended their unbeaten sequence to a club record 12 matches as they temporarily rose to ninth spot in their chase for a European spot next season.
