Arsenal 3-0 Sunderland result - Viktor Gyokeres nets brace as Mikel Arteta's team move nine points clear at top of the Premier League

Mikel Arteta’s side cruised to a 3-0 victory against Sunderland thanks to a goal from Martin Zubimendi and a brace from substitute Viktor Gyokeres, extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to nine points.

The Gunners started the match on the front foot, looking to attack early, having a succession of good opportunities in the final third without fashioning a real chance on goal.

Declan Rice went close to opening the scoring on the half hour mark when he let fly from distance looking for the top corner, only to see his effort fizz just wide of the post.

Arsenal took the lead just a few minutes before the break thanks to a superb goal from Zubimendi. Leandro Trossard rolled the ball to the Spain midfielder on the edge of the box and he then lashed home a terrific low strike which cannoned in off the post.

Sunderland committed more men forward in the second half, looking to find an equaliser, but to no avail.

Gyokeres was introduced on the hour mark and just six minutes later he doubled the Gunners’ advantage. Kai Havertz did well to poke the ball into the path of the Swede, who thumped home his effort past Robin Roefs to put Arsenal 2-0 up.

Gyokeres went on to grab his second and Arsenal’s third in stoppage time but it was a goal that was all about the work of Gabriel Martinelli, who burst forward with pace before sliding the ball across to Gyokeres, who couldn’t miss.

It was a superb day at the office for Arteta’s side, who now have 56 points on the board, nine more than Manchester City ahead of their trip to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. Sunderland sit in ninth position on 36 points.

There will be a minimum of six minutes added on at the end of this one.
