Aston Villa 3-1 Nottingham Forest result - John McGinn double and stunning Ollie Watkins goal fires Unai Emery's side second top of Premier League

John McGinn celebrated his first Premier League double for Aston Villa as Unai Emery's side moved second in the table with an assured 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest.

The Villa captain added two second-half goals (49, 73) for the home team, who have recorded 11 straight wins at Villa Park in all competitions, a run last achieved back in 1990.

Villa grabbed the lead when Ollie Watkins ended Forest's resistance with a thumping long-range finish a minute into added time in the first period.

Scotland midfielder McGinn tucked away the second with a fine side-footed finish before Morgan Gibbs-White raced clear to make it 2-1 and give Forest fresh hope on 61 minutes.

But a horrendous error by visiting keeper John Victor ended his side's hopes. He was injured and replaced by Matz Sels after racing out of his box as McGinn rounded him to seal the three points by clubbing the ball into the gaping net.

Villa are a point above Manchester City, who host Chelsea on Sunday, in second spot with Arsenal three clear at the top before they visit Bournemouth later on Saturday.

Forest remain in 17th, four points clear of West Ham, who visit Wolves aiming to close the gap.

"The manager pushes us a lot and says I should be scoring a lot more goals," the Aston Villa captain told the BBC.

"Thankfully, I managed to get two goals today so hopefully he'll get off my back a bit! I saw the keeper out, so I managed to get it round him and into the goal."

"Hopefully we can continue this run. Villa Park is a fortress at the moment. Exciting time to be a Villa player and a Villa supporter.

This time, Villa front up their first booking of the afternoon as Lamare Bogarde is yellow carded for taking out Boubacar Kamara.

Andres García replaces Matty Cash for the home side as a few of the Villa fans decide they have seen enough. Obviously, feel like their side has done the job today. And they are probably right.

Lamare Bogarde on the end of a thumping tackle by McAtee. Poor really and can have few complaints as Hooper decides to wheel out his book.

Malen on the move for Villa through the middle. So quick and dangerous on the move, but the sub Forest goalkeeper is off his line to gather the loose ball.

Lamare Bogarde replaces John McGinn and Donyell Malen is on for Ollie Watkins. Surely job is done for this impressive Villa side.

Wasn't the most difficult stop in the world, but still had to made as he dives to his left to claw away the finish by Gibbs-White.

Has been a while before Matz Sels is ready to come on and John Victor limps off. Hopefully, is it nothing too serious.

John Victor has injured himself coming off his line. Looks devastated by that error. Not sure if he has done something to his knee too. Have to feel sorry for him. Huge blunder that could be so costly.

Forest were right back in the game, but a disaster for John Victor, who is miles off his line. Ends up in no man's land and McGinn rounds the goalkeeper before slamming the finish into the empty net. Lovely finish. 3-1 now.

Nicolò Savona on for Ola Aina as James McAtee replaces Dilane Bakwa. Big final 20 minutes or so at Villa Park.

Emery reaches for his bench with a double change. Lucas Digne replaces Ian Maatsen while Jadon Sancho is on for Emiliano Buendía.

They were lining up to finish inside the Forest box with Rogers and Watkins in there before Rogers sees his finish deflected past by Williams. Vital last-gasp intervention.

Dilane Bakwa is yellow carded for a late one on Ian Maatsen. Can have no complaints about that.
