EVANILSON HEADER EXTENDS BOURNEMOUTH UNBEATEN LEAGUE RUN

Evanilson came off the bench to earn Bournemouth a merited 1-1 Premier League home draw against Sunderland with a headed equaliser at the Vitality Stadium.

The Brazilian forward - who replaced David Brooks at the break before hobbling off injured late on - nodded into the net on 63 minutes from Marcus Tavernier's pinpoint cross to cancel out Eliezer Mayenda's 18th-minute opener for Regis Le Bris' visitors.

Mayenda scored his first goal since the opening weekend of the season from close range after goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic failed to hold Habib Diarra's fierce drive.

A draw was probably a fair result, with Bournemouth extending their unbeaten run in the top flight to eight matches as Sunderland ended their three-match losing streak.

Andoni Iraola's side remain eighth in the standings on 38 points from 28 matches, while the Black Cats are a point behind on 37 points in 11th.

"It's a good point because it's a tough place, here," he told TNT Sports.

"There was clear identity, intensity and rhythm. We tested the mentality of the squad today. We reacted well after a tough run so it was important to show this character, and the point is important for us.

"First of all, after three defeats it is not easy to react. For a newly promoted side, confidence is always a topic, and we worked this week on that idea.

"We had to match the way they dueled us and after that, we had to add quality with the ball.

"We didn't seize our key moments at the start of the second half but at the end our togetherness was still strong."

Lucy Ward told TNT Sports: "From a Sunderland point of view, it's a brilliant away performance. They worked so hard, with the injuries they've got, they thought they could hold on but Bournemouth had other ideas.

"The home team are in really good form and put pressure on at the end, so I think it's a fair result."

Joe Cole told TNT Sports: "It was very important for Sunderland to stop the rot given it was four defeats in their last five. I thought they defended really well, like they've done all season.

"Bournemouth grew into the game, Evanilson's movement gave them a cutting edge.

"On reflection, a point each was a fair result. I think on another day, the VAR may have given different decisions but we move on. I don't think he got them right."

Peter Crouch told TNT Sports: "I think for Sunderland, they'll be happy. Bournemouth could've won it at the end but Sunderland proved again why they are where they are.

"They're so difficult to break down and the two centre-halves just threw themselves into everything."
