Brentford 0-0 Fulham - Premier League result as West London derby finishes goalless to dent European hopes of both sides

Brentford and Fulham played out a tedious 0-0 draw that put a dent in both sides' European aspirations, as the sides remain seventh and 12th in the Premier League table.

Bernd Leno made the decisive intervention in stoppage time when Dango Ouattara made clean contact with a Keane Lewis-Potter cross that looked set to be the winner before the German somehow deflected it over the bar, but that was one of few clear-cut chances in the West London derby.

Ryan Sessegnon was Fulham's main attacking outlet but produced a critical error every time he was given the ball in space in the penalty area.

Harry Wilson had a golden opportunity at the back post late in the second half but couldn't turn his shot goalwards, and Lewis-Potter's own team-mate Igor Thiago blocked what looked like a certain goal from a header.

Yet for much of the game it looked like neither side had anything on the line and this result now hands the initiative to Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton, Brighton, Sunderland and Bournemouth in the race for Europe.

Leno may well have kept Fulham's European hopes alive with that late wonder-save, and it won him the Player of the Match award.

Bernd Leno told TNT Sports: "These moments right at the end of the game are always the best. I wasn't sure at first if I'd kept it out, but then my team-mates came up to me. I thought we deserved the point. We've got five more finals. Maybe this point can decisive at the end. Next week, we've got another big game, and we look forward to it."

Fulham captain Joachim Andersen added: "It was an unbelievable save, but that's what Leno does. He's saved us on numerous occasions. I don't think we played amazing today, but when we cannot win, we mustn't lose. Brentford are a difficult team to play against, they're very dangerous on the counter-attack. We need to improve on our number of clean sheets, so it's good to get one today."

Joe Cole told TNT Sports: "I think Fulham will be the happier of the two sides given the teams Brentford still have to play. It did liven up a little bit, made a couple of good saves, but it lacked quality. Early on a Saturday, maybe played a factor, but to be level on points now with Chelsea is a massive achievement for Brentford."

Owen Hargreaves added: "From the off, it was quite cagey and I think both managers will admit that neither side deserved to win the game. Maybe the pitch was a little bit dry, but there was a lack of quality and it never really got going. Either team could've won the game today, but I don't think it deserved a winner and a draw was a fair result."

Leno has kept his team alive! Lewis-Potter cuts in from the left and finds Ouattara, who makes crisp contact from point-blank range for what seems like a certain goal!

Yet Leno sticks up his fist and turns it over the bar, keeping the score 0-0.

"What a save! It's one of the saves of the season," exclaims McCoist. "That could be a man-of-the-match save. It was remarkable."

Brentford finally move Andersen out of the target area from a set-piece, but bad luck AGAIN prevents them from working Leno!

It probably would've been a certain goal if it had evaded Thiago.

"That's hit his own team-mate! It was Lewis-Potter's header and it's hit Thiago. It looked like it was going in all the way!" says TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher.

Despite the lack of fresh legs, the hosts look more likely to score in the final minutes.

Brentford are yet to make a change while Marco Silva has played his final hand, bringing on Oscar Bobb and Anthonee Robinson for Cairney and the wasteful Sessegnon.

Lukic chips in to Wilson at the back post but he totally miskicks his shot and it ends up close to the corner flag. Brentford fans will say that's justice after the referee missed Wilson's foul on Damsgaard.

Collins flicks a corner on as Thiago and Ouattara are both arriving at the back post, yet neither can make contact to turn the ball goalwards.

Only Liverpool have scored more goals in the final 15 minutes of Premier League matches than Brentford this season.

As much as this hasn't been an entertaining watch, the last 20 minutes of this contest could be critical to each team's season when all is said and done. Can either side find a winner?

The Dane picks up a knock-down, arriving at pace and looking to wrap his left foot around the ball and his shot is only a foot or two away from nestling in the top corner!

Meanwhile Josh King and Raul Jimenez are on for Muniz and Smith Rowe, who each had fairly anonymous afternoons.

Once again it's smart play by Fulham on the left freeing Sessegnon in space, and once again his shot doesn't trouble Leno. Marco Silva has seen enough, he's readying two substitutes.

Bassey sees off Ouattara in an entertaining tussle, falling to the floor and enraging Brentford fans with how long he takes to get up.

Finally we have a threatening shot on target! Ouattara wraps around the top of the box then rifles a shot through the crowd, stinging Leno's palms.

"Leno was delighted it was straight down the barrel at him, the power on it," says McCoist on TNT Sports' commentary. "Either side, and he may have been in business. He meets it well."

Brentford catch Fulham off guard and find Ouattara in acres of space, but he is way too relaxed on the ball and eventually settles for a corner.

It's a horrible corner by Lukic, this game really isn't igniting in the way we hoped. Up the other end, Brentford work the ball well to Schade but his touch isn't good enough.

Fulham find more joy on left, this time through Chukwueze who picks out Sessegnon in a bit of space in the penalty area.

But not for the first time today, Sessegnon's touch lets him down at the crucial moment and though he manages to recycle the ball, Lukic then spoons a shot way off target.

The centre-back has taken a knock to the head so play stops.
