SALAH WINS IT AS HANNIBAL SUFFERS HORROR SHOW
"Football, b**** h***" were the words uttered by a certain legendary manager from down the East Lancs Road, and it certainly applied to matters here at Turf Moor.
Sir Alex Ferguson was referring to Manchester United's smash-and-grab win over Bayern Munich in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final, and while the stakes were certainly much smaller here, the impact felt very similar.
Liverpool have a habit of leaving it late this season, and somehow have managed to claim four wins from their opening four games, despite frequently being underwhelming in the early stages of this campaign.
For 95 minutes on a dreary afternoon in Lancashire, they pushed and probed with little joy against a seemingly impenetrable Burnley backline that looked on a course to seal a hard-earned point.
The Clarets were about to extend their unbeaten home run to 26 games with a superb defensive effort, which seemed to have every player heroically throwing themselves towards the ball every time Liverpool looked to shoot from distance.
But then, a moment of madness swayed the game in favour of The Reds. Former Manchester United academy starlet Hannibal Mejbri raised his arms in what was a seemingly instinctive attempt to keep out Jeremie Frimpong's cross, and referee Michael Oliver had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Mohamed Salah was having a forgettable afternoon, but came up trumps again for his side with a superb penalty, sending the reigning champions three points clear at the top of the table.
It was harsh on Scott Parker's side, who were so near, yet so far from producing a defensive masterclass.
They have a chance to bounce back against Nottingham Forest next Saturday, while Liverpool's attention turns to their Champions League opener against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
