10-MAN CHELSEA BATTLE TO DRAW AGAINST ARSENAL AFTER CAICEDO SENT OFF
Arsenal’s title charge remains on track after Mikel Merino cancelled out Trevoh Chalobah’s opener in a feisty London derby at Stamford Bridge.
The game was turned on its head after Moises Caicedo was sent off just after the half-hour mark for a dangerous challenge on Merino.
A late injury setback for Arsenal saw centre-back William Saliba ruled out of the clash and replaced by Piero Hincapie.
In a fiery first half, three yellow cards were issued within the opening 15 minutes to Martin Zubimendi, Marc Cucurella and Cristhian Mosquera.
The best chance of the half fell to Estevao for The Blues but he skied his effort inside the box, while Gabriel Martinelli’s low effort was well saved by Robert Sanchez.
After 38 minutes, the big moment of the half came as Caicedo dived into a challenge and caught Merino on the top of his foot.
Referee Anthony Taylor initially gave a yellow card but it was upgraded after VAR recommended him to go to the monitor.
After the break, Chelsea opened the scoring through Chalobah when he flicked on a corner at the near post to break the deadlock after 48 minutes.
The Blues’ lead did not last long as Merino powered home a Bukayo Saka cross from close range in the 59th minute.
Despite Arsenal’s man-advantage, they failed to create any clear-cut chances for most of the second half.
However, in the 94th minute, Hincapie drove to the Chelsea byline and clipped in a cross that was flicked on by Jurrien Timber but in doing so, he took it away from Viktor Gyokeres who had a tap in.
Arsenal remain top of the league and five points clear of Manchester City, while Chelsea finished the weekend third, six points behind The Gunners.

MARESCA: WE WERE THE BETTER TEAM BEFORE RED CARD
The Chelsea boss, speaking to Sky Sports, stated that he believes his side were the better of the two before Caicedo's dismissal.
"I think we showed we are heading in the right direction. I always say the same. The performance has been fantastic. We were a much better team than them 11 v 11 but with 10 players, it is difficult but we dealt with it outstandingly.
"11 v 11, we were better than them. We tried to exploit the best solution, the best space. We knew the space was for Malo and Estevao on that side. Tonight we can be happy even if we didn't win."

Despite feeling his side were better, Maresca said the red card was the right call.
"I think the red card is the red card," he said. "I struggle to understand the different ways to judge. What about Bentancur to Reece? Why is one a red card and one isn't? I think it's a red card tonight, it's clear. Why the difference? Is what it is.
"Moises is always the same way. Top player for us. The desire from him is to try and win the game.

"You have to double the effort, that is the most important thing. We didn't change a lot on the ball. We tried to go to Liam. In open play, the idea was exactly the same.
"I think we are better than last season. We are closer. We'll see where we are in February and March and then we'll assess our target."

ARTETA: REFEREE MADE THE RIGHT CALL
The Arsenal boss shared his post-match thoughts after a fierce battle at Stamford Bridge.
He said: "A really tough one. Two teams that play with a lot of intensity and aggression, you could sense it in every tackle. The game settled and after the red card, we needed to settle and make the judgement but we conceded a foul and a goal. Two top teams fighting for the Premier League so it's normal.
"We had four players with yellow cards and you could see they were targeting those players. The first action in the second half, we conceded and we had to get through that. We scored a brilliant goal. We had two or three big chances.
"They are a really good team. They've scored seven goals from corners, we've scored eight."

Arteta is already setting his sights on the games ahead but feels Anthony Taylor was right in sending Caicedo off.
"It was really fast. I saw the reaction and everyone was saying he's off. Anthony made the call and I think it's the right one.
"It's been a massive week emotionally and physically. We had one day less to recover. They got to play at Stamford Bridge after they just beat Barcelona. I expect and always want to win the game.
"We have another game on Wednesday and we have to prepare really well to beat a tough opponent like Brentford and then we have Aston Villa."

MERINO: IT WAS A HORRIBLE CHALLENGE
The Arsenal goalscorer spoke after the game and spoke about the challenge on him that led to Caicedo's red card.
He said: "On one hand, disappointed because we didn't win. When you wear this shirt, you want to win every game. This is a really tough stadium to come and take a point. We could have done things better but the team showed good mentality.
"Maybe managing the game better and understanding what they were trying to do. With 10 men, we could have had more patience with the ball. Trying to find the wings and cross with players in the box. Obviously, they are a good side."
Merino opened up about the challenge on him that saw Caicedo sent off.
"I felt my ankle go all the way but luckily I have very mobile ankles and body. I knew it was a horrible challenge and it was going to be a red card.

JAMES: DISAPPOINTED TO COME AWAY WITH A POINT
The Chelsea captain spoke to Sky Sports and he believes his side can take positives from the game.
He said: "Disappointing to come away with only one point. We went down to 10 men pretty early in the game and that made it more difficult.
"I think everyone can see where we are and what we are fighting for. I think today was a big statement. Even though we wanted to win, there are lots of positives to take. I'm proud of the boys. It was electric here today. We take a point and move forward."

On whether it felt inevitable that there would be a red card, James said: "If you look at the amount of yellows there were, I thought there was going to be one more red. It's a London derby, everyone wants to win this game."
James also opened up about what Maresca said at half-time. He said: "He changed the formation slightly, we knew we weren't going to have the ball as much. We had to soak up the pressure and try to catch them on the pressure. We didn't have the final touches."

CHELSEA SHOW GROWING MATURITY
For Chelsea, they will be happy with the way they dealt with playing a man down considering how they fell apart in similar circumstances at Old Trafford this season.
Before the game, The Blues would have taken a point but they were on top until Caicedo was sent off and will feel there was an opportunity to hand Arsenal their second defeat of the season.
It s a tricky trip to Leeds in midweek for Chelsea before an equally daunting away day to Bournemouth next weekend - they will also have to do it without the now suspended Caicedo.
They remain third in the table, one point behind Man City and six behind Arsenal.

ARSENAL REMAIN FIVE POINTS CLEAR
The Gunners leave west London with a point and extend their unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge to seven years. Having defeated Spurs and Bayern Munich earlier this week, the tiredness in their legs was obvious.
Their focus now switches to Brentford at home in the league on Wednesday before a trip to high-flying Aston Villa next weekend.
Arteta will be happy with his side that they have managed two wins and a draw from a big week of fixtures. Another step towards the title for his side.

Both sides will be equally pleased and disappointed with that result.
Chelsea will be proud of their point after losing Caicedo before the break but know Arsenal were there for the taking prior to it.
