Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham Hotspur result - Spurs face final day relegation decider after derby defeat

Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos helped Chelsea to a 2-1 win over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur as their relegation woes deepen.

Spurs started brightly, knowing a point would all but confirm survival, as Mathys Tel hit the post with a free header.

However, Chelsea hit back on the counter when Fernandez wrong-footed Antonin Kinsky from 25 yards out as he swerved a shot into the bottom corner.

The opener seemed to rattle Tottenham as the match became more fractious and Chelsea looked more likely to get a second.

While their North London rivals Arsenal celebrated their title win, Tottenham’s woes deepened as Santos doubled The Blues’ lead.

Randal Kolo Muani’s errant pass went straight to Cole Palmer who broke forward, before Fernandez squared to Santos, who tapped home from six yards out.

Richarlison looked to give the visitors hope when he converted Pape Sarr’s backheel from close range and a famous comeback looked on the cards, spearheaded by the energy from substitute James Maddison.

Spurs felt they were unlucky not to get an equaliser when Marc Cucurella rugby tackled Micky van de Ven at a corner but VAR deemed it not to be a penalty as the corner had not been taken yet.

The win moves Chelsea up to eighth, still in contention for European spots, while Tottenham remain in danger of relegation on the final day.

If West Ham beat Leeds, Tottenham must get a result at home against Everton to stay in the Premier League.

There are some strong words after the whistle from James Maddison and Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham were poor for large parts of the match, but will feel hard done by with that refereeing decision with five minutes remaining.

Chelsea work the ball forward before Enzo Fernandez squares Pedro Neto's cross and Santos sweeps home from six yards out.
