Manchester City v Leeds result - Phil Foden's stoppage-time winner sinks Leeds United as England star dazzles with brace

Phil Foden was the big winner of the day as goals in the first and 91st minute helped Manchester City to a frantic 3-2 victory over Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium.

Foden’s 59-second goal was the fastest scored in the Premier League season so far this season - before Malick Thiaw bettered that by seven seconds in Newcastle's evening victory over Everton - and Josko Gvardiol soon made it a 2-0 lead.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin proved to be a game changer as the half-time substitute scored Leeds’ first, then Lukas Nmecha put a penalty home at the second attempt, before Foden’s added-time goal.

It was a tense game as both teams came in with defeats on their backs. But Foden's goal inside the opening minute set up a dominant first half for City, especially after Gvardiol extended their lead to two, and it seemed like Leeds were doomed for another defeat.

After the interval, Leeds manager Daniel Farke brought on Jaka Bijol and Calvert-Lewin. The latter brought a new energy to the visitors, taking advantage of a slack piece of City defending to cling onto the ball and slot it into the net.

The hosts continued to lose their composure, with Gvardiol making another error to give Leeds a lifeline in the form of a penalty. Gianluigi Donnarumma got hands to Nmecha’s first kick, but the ball rebounded kindly to the German’s right foot, and he put the equaliser into the centre of the net.

The Etihad seemed to hold its breath for the next 20 minutes as both teams scrambled for control, and the ten added minutes would prove advantageous for City as Foden finally broke the stalemate with left-foot beauty.

Leeds’ luck would run out in the remaining nine minutes and despite a strong second-half performance, they depart Manchester pointless. 

City sit second and will face Fulham on Tuesday, while Leeds’ next chance of changing their 18th-placed hopes will be on Wednesday against Chelsea.

This marks four straight defeats for Daniel Farke, but it was an admirable effort from Leeds nonetheless.

Manchester City take the win in front of their home crowd, the 100th goal wasn't meant to be for Erling Haaland today, but Phil Foden will walk away as the big winner of this match.

A fantastic opportunity as the ball skips across City's box, none of the Leeds players can get there to capitalise.

Free kick for Leeds again after Diaz clips Calvert-Lewin. Bogle doesn't get it right and now City brings on John Stones for Doku.

Relief rings through the Etihad now - Foden runs across the box behind a wall of players, finds the gap under Gvardiol with his left foot, and it's exactly what City needed! Plenty of time still for Leeds to recover but it's never easy to be on the back foot.

Doku again, this time to Marmoush and it's a much better header that Perri gets his hands to. So close to a perfect substitution, and ten added minutes have been called to the home crowd's enthusiasm.

City decide that they are fed up of Leeds' box and they press now. Doku sends a cross to Haaland and it is perfect, but he is held back by Gruev and his header bounces into Perri's arms.

Silva comes off for Omar Marmoush.

Throw in Leeds by Ampedu, Tanaka gets the better of O'Reilly but Haaland heads it away. Such a strange sight to see the striker at this end of the pitch.

Calvert-Lewin wins another throw in, City have been trapped in their own box by a corner and two throw ins now. Calvert-Lewin has a couple of looks but the offside flag goes up both times to the Etihad's relief.

Donnarumma has earned himself a yellow now for his attitude.

Ampadu is being tended to by the medics as City are desperate to continue their drive. O'Reilly finds himself in clear space for a half second, passes to Doku who plays it into the box to no avail. Ampadu returns to the pitch as City remain in their final third.

Leeds will bring on Noah Okafor for Nmecha.

Corner City and it's another scramble in the penalty box now. Cherki goes on for Reijnders for City.

It's silly from Doku in the final third and the whistle blows to give possession to Leeds. City are absolutely throwing this match away and they need to find some composure fast.

Haaland is desperate to get some aid but it is one too many demands for City to mind at the moment.

Leeds find themselves out of danger again as a cross from Silva heads into the box, and City are there, but it's scrambled clear somehow. City bring it back in, Doku with the shot now and Perri blocks - Struijk barely kicks it out at the post before Haaland can get there.

Nmecha faces off now, he's scored four out of his last five. He goes to the bottom right and it's denied by Donnarumma, but Nmecha collects the rebound that comes straight to his right foot and slams that into the center of the net!

Three goals in three games and he scores the equaliser!

Calvert-Lewin goes down in the box with a challenge from Gvardiol, he misses the ball and the Leeds man sprawls down onto the pitch.

He earns himself a yellow card and Leeds have a lifeline! It continues to be a disaster for City's defense.

Gonzalez gets a free kick for City at the halfway line after he is swarmed by Leeds. Doku tries to cross it in but it floats over Haaland to Silva on the other wing to keep possession.

Gonzalez to Doku, he slams it into a Leeds defender in a flooded penalty box, and Nmecha desperately tries to hold onto the ball for a counter but is run out by three City players.

The free kick is neutralised by Donnarumma, and Silva picks up a yellow now. Donnarumma is on the ground as the rest of the players crowd around Guardiola in effort to recover from a truly chaotic ten minutes. Rodon also earns a yellow.

Leeds look alive now as they claim majority of possession in this half so far. Hope is back for the Whites after a truly embarrassing display of defending from City.

Calvert-Lewin wins a free kick right outside the penalty box as Nunes takes him down.

Calvert-Lewin is a super sub as he narrows the deficit back down to one! The ball comes to him after a bad reverse pass from Nunes and he is off, Nunes and Gvardiol are on him and he staggers his way through the box. It's messy defending and Calvert-Lewin clings on to slot the ball just inside the left post!

Haaland taking his first glance of the day at Perri so far, he tries to take the ball down but is edged out by a Leeds player. He has yet to have a shot at goal.

Leeds free kick, it goes high and Donnarumma punches it down. It comes out to Ampadu who strikes - but City are lucky to have a swath of players between him and the net and it stays 2-0.

Leeds make two subs over the break, bringing on Jaka Bijol and Dominic Calvert-Lewin in place of Gnonto and James.

His 59-second shocker saw him claim the fastest goal in the league so far, and take a 63rd goal to surpass both David Beckham and Yaya Toure (62).
