Manchester United 2-0 Manchester City - Premier League result as Patrick Dorgu and Bryan Mbeumo get Michael Carrick’s reign off to perfect start

MAN UNITED BLITZ CITY AS CARRICK'S REIGN STARTS WITH A BANG

An exuberant Manchester United kicked off Michael Carrick’s interim reign in the best way possible, playing Manchester City off the park as goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu handed The Red Devils three crucial points in the Premier League.

United got a huge slice of luck early on when Diogo Dalot raked Jeremy Doku’s knee with his studs but only picked up a yellow card.

After Harry Maguire missed a golden opportunity to head United in front from a yard out, sending his header from a corner off the crossbar, Amad Diallo scored the first of three disallowed goals when he rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma and rolled the ball home, only for the linesman’s flag to deny him.

There was a carbon copy move later in the half when Bruno Fernandes was the one frustrated but Pep Guardiola’s side never looked like kicking into gear and taking the game to their hosts despite dominating possession.

Erling Haaland only had one clear-cut opportunity all afternoon while City did not register a shot on target all game and they were made to pay just after the hour mark when Fernandes drove the ball 50 yards in a lightning counter-attack, then fed Mbeumo who fired a fantastic first-time finish across Donnarumma, who had been excellent to keep the game 0-0 that long.

Neither that strike nor a rare double substitution at half-time could shake Manchester City from their slumber though and Dorgu sealed victory when he ghosted in front of Rico Lewis to latch onto Matheus Cunha’s cross and turn it past Donnarumma via the post.

Substitute Mason Mount was only denied United’s third by VAR after Cunha again surged upfield and picked out his team-mate to finish in injury time.

The result means Arsenal can move nine points clear of The Citizens with victory against Nottingham Forest live on TNT Sports and discovery+ this evening, while United are up to fourth, pending the weekend’s results for Liverpool, Brentford and Newcastle.

Lisandro Martinez and Bryan Mbeumo were totemic at opposite ends of the pitch and saluted the victory at full-time:

Bryan Mbeumo told Sky Sports: "Scoring in front of this stand [the Stretford End] is unbelievable, and to do it in the derby is even more special. This place was unbelievable today. We used the energy of the fans.

"When I came back, a lot had changed, but we've got a very group and we always stick together. We have a fantastic unit. It's not easy as we only had three days, and because we're all together and have the same aim, we tried to be as focused as possible today. It was a team effort."

Lisandro Martinez added: "It's unbelievable. Being here with our people and with the fans, with the team. We really know how we suffer during the season, but the only way is to show our face here and to show who we really are. Today, it was the best moment to do it, and the team - including those on the bench - was part of that.

"One important thing that Michael Carrick said, 'use the energy of the people', and today, we did that. When we're together like this, it is impossible to lose at home.

"When you play against these types of players, you have to defend as a team. We were compact and we then had confidence to go into the duels. You could see today there was a different energy when you look into the eyes of the players. Today, the team won. That's the most important thing for me, and I'm happy with that."

Replays show Cunha was just ahead of Rodri when Dorgu's pass was played, but it won't do much to dampen the home fans' celebrations now.

Mount's only been on the pitch a few seconds, but he's driven the final nail into Manchester City's coffin! Dorgu intercepts a lofted ball and feeds Cunha, who surges down the right with The Citizens overcommitted forwards.

From there, Cunha just needs to find the right pass for Mount and he does, meaning the Englishman can roll the ball into an empty net and the Old Trafford party can kick up a gear!

Amad gets to a clearance and then dances inside Ake, before unleashing a thunderbolt that crashes into the woodwork! Replays show Donnarumma might've got a slight touch to that, he's been Manchester City's best player today.

There will be five added minutes.

Finally, the game has taken a breath. City have only had one shot since Dorgu's goal and it's looking more and more like this won't be their day.

United will do their old foes Arsenal a huge favour if they can hold on. If that happens and The Gunners can beat Nottingham Forest this evening on TNT Sports and discovery+, City will be a huge nine points behind in the title race.

The additions of Semenyo and Marc Guehi seemed like they could revitalize City's title charge, but that's a massive gap.

Before the game if you'd told fans Haaland had been taken off for Devine Mukasa, most people would assume it was because City were winning comfortably and Guardiola wanted to save the Norwegian's legs.

But that's not the case, he's barely got any service all game and now Haaland trudges off alongside Silva and Doku as Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders come on.

Meanwhile, Casemiro gets a standing ovation as he's replaced by Manuel Ugarte.

Donnarumma is breached again and that could be GAME OVER! And once again, it's so simple.

Amad gives Cunha a one-on-one against O'Reilly, he gains half a yard and fires the ball across goal and Dorgu has the jump on Lewis meaning he can turn the ball off the post and in!

Guardiola is preparing another raft of changes.

The experienced campaigner took a knock, though may well have been staying down a bit longer to run down the clock.

Amad almost managed a similar second goal, driving across goal from the left but the angle was much tighter thanks to strong defensive work by O'Reilly.

Meanwhile that goal was Mbeumo's last significant intervention, he's off for Matheus Cunha.

Carrick needs to start thinking about his substitutions while Guardiola doesn't have too many cards left to play given City's injury crisis.

O'Reilly and Cherki's introduction hasn't really turned the tide.

And this one WON'T BE CHALKED OFF! It's a lightning break by United and effortlessly simple, Fernades drives the ball 50 yards upfield with runners either side of him, plays in Mbeumo and his first-time shot is rifled across Donnarumma and into the net!

It's a fully deserved lead.

And once again, it's Donnarumma keeping this game 0-0! Fernandes lifts a superb cross for Mbeumo and the Cameroonian hits his shot into the ground, making it so difficult to save.

Yet somehow, the Italian re-adjusts and bats the ball away!

Once again, United have a brilliant opportunity break the deadlock! Amad latches onto a superb switch and drives in, firing across Donnarumma who can only parry the ball into the path of Casemiro.

The Brazilian opts to stay up after contact but the stumble allows Donnarumma to get back out and make a second save.

Haaland gets his first sight of goal and pulls the trigger, but his shot his stopped by a sliding Lisandro Martinez, with the resulting corner also going nowhere.

Khusanov, who stopped that Mbeumo chance in the first half, does the same trick here with Dorgu but this time the challenge looks more 50-50 and United fans can't believe they didn't get a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Max Alleyne's first Manchester Derby is over, Nico O'Reilly is on in his place so Nathan Ake will move to centre-back. It was somewhat surprising that Rayan Cherki didn't start but he has 45 minutes to make a difference now as Phil Foden, star of so many of these fixtures, has been withdrawn.
